Whats the deal with people's form

You always hear people harping on having good form and doing the workouts right over how much weight you can do. Why is it that some of the biggest guys come into the gym and have the worst form? I mean I work like hell to build my biceps and everything on my body reacts well accept for them. My biceps will just not grow, and then as I am always trying to pay close attention to my form with each rep I see some guy beside me throwing up three times the weight as I am doing but looking like he is going to throw his back out at the same time. Most of the guys with matured bi's that roll through both of my gym's have horrible form but with way better results than I am getting. It is very hard to want to maintain what I am doing when obviously the "wrong way" seems to work great for other people.

There is no "T" in the word "bicep".

I usually see it more from the skinny dudes with cut up T-Shirts that have been lifting for about 8 months. Love watching them use 3x more weight than they can handle doing quarter reps on everything.

I think military gyms are the worst.. I actually saw a group of guys on friday put 500 on the squat rack get under the weight bring in down two inches then push back up.. oh no not two inches about legal.. just two inches total movement.. I couldn't even laugh at them when they started giving each other high fives.. only ashamed they were wearing army shirts.. afterwards the invited a new type of workout.. it was the chest press/ leg press.. where you get on the leg press, put your hands on your knees and push with both. but only going three or four inches once again.

to tell you the truth... I have always noticed the same thing.... I say just find what works for you best... the more you learn and get older, the more you realize there are no definitives in anything... doesn't help your Q, but i would say it is the truth.

obviously the two inch squat is dumb, and there are many others that do ridiculous exercise technique, but when we are talking about not a topnotch model form on certain exercises...well, who knows.

I know what you mean. I see it at civilian gyms too but I am deployed right now and seeing it here is what made me really think about it.

haha.. yeah or when you see guys do rope pushdowns and throw there arms in the air, swinging wildly or when some do bicep barbell curls and use there whole body to get the weight up.

I think cheating is effective, but only when you can't do any more reps with proper form.

its always the older big guys at gyms ive been at...which baffles, me...i guess age doesnt equal wisdom....i dont care though, im a small guy, and i still love the feeling i get curling my little 30lb dumbells with flawless form next to the slobbering fool sway-curling his 60's...(the sway curl is when u bring that baby from behind you all the way up to your chin in a beautiful half circle, then use the reverse momentum to get the other side up...lol)

I think there's something to be said about using "loose" form sometimes when your pushing yourself but not on every exercise. When I push an exercise with looser form near my limit I get stronger. Over time that weight gets easier and my form improves with it. You have to know your body though and what it can and can't handle...

So what your saying is using kenetic energy or a mechanical advantage by recruiting other muscles into the motion is beneficial to muscular development .... Ok I'll stop being a dick you can use more weight because you recruit other muscles in your body or generate potential energy by the rapid decent of the weight... if you remove these two things you cant use the same weight but you drastically reduce the potential for injury and increase the amount of stimulation the muscle group receives... leading to longevity and efficiency of training...

I agree cheating is effective when you can no longer use proper form. I watch pro's on you tube and there form sucks. But maybe there just so big there arms cant get any closer? LOL

Despite the fact I have small arms I have very strong biceps, my friend always pisses me off because he refuses to let me be stronger on curls because normally he is stronger than me so he kinda slings the bar up on barbell curls and bring his elbows back and uses his back and everything. its so obvious he cant lift near that much weight with good form but he wont accept it.

When we get done with a set of my full down and up barbell curls and his shitty ones he will be like yea i got 2 more reps than you so im still a good bit stronger

My buddy does that when we work out. After he swings his set and puts down the weight i say "Is your back pumped?" He look at me oddly and says "i thought we were working out arms?" I just laugh.

some of these guys are not necessarily cheating, they are lifting in a different style that promotes more of a muscle pump, when your training solely for pump you do whatever is necessary to volumize the muscle more. Even the pro's do it. But its also a good way to get injured sometimes if you are not an advanced trainee

It may be/seem frustrating but it all takes time. I have been working on form for 2+ years now and not worried about how much I can lift. Now I get comments all the time from guys saying/asking why my arms are 2x the size of theirs but they lift so much more than me.

I LOL, then I show them it's FORM.... I say OK take this weight and do it like this...... FULL curl straight bottom to top and I take a good 3 count to reach the top. Most of the time they cant do it.

Keep concentrating on Form, the size will come.

I am a strong believer in good form 90% of the time.

Cheating a weight up and peforming slow ecentric negatives is a good way to stimulate more muscle fibres = more growth

However rep to failure before cheating...

This reminds me of the youtube segment "A day in the dungeon" with Dorian Yates. There is something to be said about great form to really break down a muscle, and having a spotter to really push you. However, if you don't have a spotter, once you're completely spent, sometimes cheating a couple extra reps to really maximize that pump works too. To each his own as long as you're seeing gains I suppose, but I'm a fan of great form, lower risk of injury. Big gains are made in the kitchen anyways.
