Whats the best training for Functional Strength?

As a Dietitian, i get this question a lot....and i have never been able to really pin a type of training (Athletic Training is not my specialty). So, what do you all think is the best type of training from any branch (weights/cardio/circuit/hiit/mma/anything), to make the average Joe, into a lean mean fighting machine, and do so in the shortest amount of time??

I'm looking for some personal experiences or opinions on this topic.

IMO, For functional conditioning and strength, MMA training is the way to go. I trained at the Team Quest gym in T-town for a while and felt like I was in the best shape of my life. Although, you really need to be in somewhat decent shape before beginning. I was working out, running, surfing, etc. before I started training there and still had trouble with some of the workouts.

From a functional point of view I would say power lifting combined with some bodybuilding and finally as the above poster surfing to top it off. A combination of speed, power, and endurance will yield the best results.

Strongman type workouts (tires, kettle bells, farmers walks to name a couple) mixed with MMA and powerlifting. Personally I would throw sprinting in as well, maybe some of the stuff they do at the NFL combines. Imagine shoving a guy as hard as you can from a standing position. Now imagine exploding towards him from 10 feet away and shoving him. HUGE difference in the force generated.

    Powerlifting is best for strength
bodybuilding is best for size and physique
lifting large bulky objects is good for balance and incorporates core and stabiliser muscles like in strongman comps.
