    Cardio before or after weights?

    Newbie here, I work out in the mornings most of the time, is it best to work cardio after weights or before? I know how important it is to take in some quality protein after weights but if I'm shooting for a half hour or more of cardio, when's the best time to hit the treadmill?

    After weights. I do at least 20mins after every upper body session. Save your intensity for the weights. More efficient for fat loss too.

    I always do 40 mins after hitting the weights...no way I'd be effective in the weight room after cardio.

    cardio after weights is the key .. to do cardio before would zap your energy stores and make the weight counter productive... Or even better would be to do cardio on a day where you dont do weights.

    To directly answer the thread title

    Neither!

    Lifting and doing cardio on the same day will compromise your anabolic pathways

    Your telling your body to gain muscle size then your telling it to loose bodyweight to improve endurance

    Do your cardio on a separate day

    PK my only problem with that is schedule. I've started a split Tick suggested, that's 2 days on one off, as my work schedule is 24hrs on with 48hrs off. I'd love to do cardio one day then lift the next but the day after I wouldn't really have axcess to any decent equipment.

    I think this depends on your goals? If your goal is fat loss then as stated above after weights would be recommended.

    While you may or may not be correct, the op is new and he does not need to be so specific at this stage of his fitness development. Everyone here is correct but here is the reason. When you do anaerobic activity, your body only uses carbs for energy. When you do aerobic, your body first uses carbs, then uses fats for energy. If you cardio first, you use up the only energy source your body has to do anaerobic activity and lifts won't be as good. Lifting first allows your body to do good lifts and by the time you do cardio your carb energy will be low, forcing your body to use more fat for energy, and thus lose fat. Good luck and work hard!
