Take what bro?
My guess is T3 since T3 and T4 are important regulators of BMR and body composition.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm confused. Your sister has hypothyroidism and does not want to take "what"? Thyroid meds?
Edit: nevermind....the pros beat me to it.
T3 won't cause her to gain weight unless she starts eating more than the extra T3 is burning (it can increase appetite). Let me guess: weight gain is a listed side effect? They have to put that on the list if even one subject gained weight, regardless of the real cause.

If she's got hypothyroidism, and not on meds...that WILL make her gain weight.
Taking thyroid meds will make her lose weight, as long as she doesn't start eating *more than she is now.
Isn't t4 the more common prescribed med for hypo? That's what I'm on so no chance to up the dose and lose bf. Especially if in caloric deficit and low carbs. Tricky territory messing with thyroid meds, but she should get a safe dose from her GP.
It really depends on the person. If they're hypo because not enough t4 is converted to t3, then t3 is prescribed. If there's just not enough t4, then t3 is prescribed.
And of course, people can fall anywhere inbetween and end up with both t4 and t3
What about if they product 0 TSH, and have neither t4 or t3? Then they prescribe t4 which partially converts to t3 and provides stable levels of both t4 and t3.Originally Posted by BBJT200

Armour Thyroid and T3 make a good couple.

my sister is being prescribed thyrosine i think thats what she said. she read that the thyroid meds can make her gain weight in some cases. so she was scared.
I'm confused. Thyrosine is an over-the-counter weight loss pill.
Thyroxine(what I've been taking for 15 yrs) is a prescription taken by ppl with under-active thyroid function. Weight gain is the most common side of being hypo. You take thyroxine to increase thyroid function. As levels get to normal, weight usually decreases. Didn't her Dr. explain this to her?
Stats have been working as RN for 8yrs currently working on MSN. I believe drug she’s probably on is levothyroxine. It’s the main drug that I administer to patients that have hypothyroidism. It’s a synthetic derivative of thyroxine, and it normalizes blood levels of TSH, T4, and T3. When it normalizes blood levels it will cause her to lose weight. Her Doctor should have educated her that since levothyroxine is identical to the thyroxine the body manufactures, side effects are rare. Doctors and nurse educate the public but does the public always understand? No! Her Doctor should have had her repeat back her understanding of the medication. If she’s confused about the medication she should contact her provider and have him clarify any confusion that she is having.
