    HIIT/Tabata cardio

How would you say HIIT style or Tabata training for cardio compair to traditional cardio?

Recently in a different thread I mentioned to another member that I was doing about 15 minutes of HIIT 20sec on/10sec off, 3 days a week for cardio. he advised I should up it to 1hr.
While I agree I should do more cardio than I am. I feel like 1 hour of HIIT is just a LOT!

You couldn't do HIIT for an hour. The idea behind this and Tabata is they're intense, you get your heart rate real high, burn a lot of calories in a short period of time.
I would think the member intended to suggest that you change to LISS (Low Intesity Steady State) for an hour, keeping heart rate around 60-70%. This is better for fat loss, personally I would do either, as long as the calories are burnt, you're creating a deficit and that's what ultimately causes weight loss.

Thanks. That's what I was thinking.. No way could I do HIIT for an hour! I did dead landmines tabata style for 8 minutes last night and wanted to die haha.

I've kinda started to do both.. Start with about a half hour of light to moderate walk/run then do my HIIT (usually on the cybex machine) or Tabata with light weight dumbells or bodyweight exercises

Yeah agreed, no way you could do an hour of HIIT. Well at least I could never!!! lol The idea is to burn as much calories as possible in a short amount of time... I do 20 min of HIIT three days a week and has been producing results!!

That's almost exactly how I'm doing mine.. But only 15 minutes 3 days a week. I am planning on bumping it up though

I was under the impression that you dont do HIIT for any longer than 25min, HIIT creates the most EPOC (excessive post-workout oxegyn consumption) which in fact continues to burn calories for a number of hours after the exercises are complete! Where as with longer low intensity workout you only burn calories for the time your doin the exercise! I prefer HIIT personally as i get a better pump and sweat from it. I still throw in a 5 to 8km outdoor road run once a fortnight just for endurance! Correct me if im wrong though

I do my HIIT at max incline, max resistance on the cybex "elliptical" thing 20 on 10 off

I do my tabada with either bodyweight exercises (push ups, jumping jacks, burpies, high knees) or lighter weight dumbells, kettlebells, or other weighted movements like landmines and dead landmines.
