    Protein shakes for breakfast, good or bad?

    Been doing this for quite some time now to help meet my daily protein quota. Is this good or bad for the body on a daily basis?

    Good or bad in terms of what?

    Are you concerned with the timing, ie protein shake in the morning as opposed to any other time of the day?

    It makes no difference, but you should definitely mix up your protein sources.

    Just an overall concern. I drink them 2x a day, Morning for breakfast before work, then after a workout at the end of a day a few hours before dinner.

    Just depends on what your trying to accomplish. Your body will digest liquid in about 30 minutes were real food takes about 3 hrs resulting in more calories burned to digest the food

    So there is no fat burning results from just drinking a shake as opposed to just eating regular food?

    The amount of calories your body uses to digest food, shakes,food, and even fiber, is negligible in terms of overall calorie consumption. You can eat whatever, whenever as long as you meet your daily macros, and fulfill your calorie allowance.

    No need to be concerned. But if possible its better to get protein from real food. The real food will also have minerals and vitamins and other nutrients that will be beneficial.

    The thermic effect of food is not significantly impacted by whole foods vs liquid foods. It's generally only impacted by caloric content and macro composition. The reason whole foods are GENERALLY superior for fat loss is bc they're usually more satiating. Having too many calories coming from liquid sources MAY cause the individual in question to subconsciously take in more calories inhibiting fat loss. This is an indirect action though and shouldn't be confused with a direct mechanism bc it does not directly influence TEF or fat loss.

    In your example about liquid calories digesting in 30min vs while foods digesting over 3hrs leading to more calories burned:

    Wether it takes 3 hrs or 30 min (let's assume these numbers are absolute for the same of the discussion) has no impact on TEF. It takes a certain amount of energy to break down a gram of protein, or a gram of fat, or a gram of carbs. It's irrelevant to TEF the amount of time it takes bc it will always require the same energy to break down each gram of each macronutrient.

    I always have been told you want to take a whey protein shake as soon as you wake up to get protein in as fast as possible because of the fast you had just went through by sleeping... I know the fast is battled by taking Casin before bed but is it overkill drinking the whey in the am if drinking the Casin at night ?

    I don't drink casin at night before bed, jus one decent dinner to put me at 200 grams of protein a day

    agree. when I'm working, it makes a nice mid morning/afternoon snack.

    Macro composition is key here. My point is to many people depend on shakes as food intake and whole food is a better choice

    I'm one of those ppl and I've noticed not a single difference other than increased hunger at times in my little n=1 experiment. It boils down to preference bc a calorie from a shake is no different than a calorie from whole food in terms of body composition.

    and i am the exact opposite I noticed the best changes to my physical appearance when i gave up shakes and replaced them with real food

    Could it have been due to the issue I posted about earlier, namely the decreased satiety with liquid cals causing you to eat more without realizing it?

    No if anything it wasn't enough food. Most people that rely on protein shakes do not eat properly and once you learn how to eat the proper amount of protein carbs and fats i cant honestly see why you would want to rely on processed calories instead of real whole food unless you are in a pinch or using it as a supplement to your food plan in place. Do not get me wrong i think protein shakes have there place but again many people rely on them to much as the main source of food.

    I look at it like this, Protein shake with 40 g of Protein, or 6-8 hard boiled eggs with all that saturated fat. That is why I choose the shake. Plus I dont get hungry after a shake till around 2-3 hrs after consuming it. And of course, "Cap'n Crunch" is just a no no right now.

    Shakes are my friend on my refeed days lol, that gives me the leeway of eating a wack of carbs, keeping the fats low, pretty much just making it a carb up day without worrying about nothong else then counting the carbs and fats in the carbs I consume
    As for shakes in the morning, hell ya, why not, I am usually busy preparig my meals for work ect ect, I find a couoke scoops of protein goes down obviously quick also taste amazing mixed with oats, I find it taste alot like the packaged quaker oatmeal when protein powder is mixed with your oats

    Plus I get my iso protein at a really good price lol $20.00 for a 5lbs tub, I cant buy 2lbs of chicken breast for under $20.00 here in canada, chicken is like gold here, but I consume a lot of lean ground beef tho for my protein, egg whites, whole eggs, tuna ect ect

    As for when I am in a caloric deficit other then the morning shake, like stated above whole foods seem to do the trick making me feel fuller longer other then liquid from shakes, reversed when I bulk, if consuming a wack of food a shake here and there between big meals I find helps me get my set macros in for the day if I am struggling to consume whole foods, so yes I agree with shakes have there role either way
