Computer connecting issue i know wrong forum

My home computer thinks it belongs to a network.. i guess the networking card did something when I connected my mp3 player.. God knows..

The people at my Internet provider told me my computer is confused.

It keeps grabbing ip address assigned to a network from the server and the service i use says there’s nothing they can do.

I think the computer belonged to a network before it belonged to me and has somehow reverted back to it's original settings.

I have already rebooted the computer and reset the modem and unplugged the modem and all the power cords and checked to ensure they are all plugged in correctly.

I have also, Click on Start the Run then type in cmd into the command line you get. You will then get a black screen, type in ipconfig/all and give us the results of that output, and it is definitely is grabbing a network ip address.

I do have a router.. do u think this will solve the problem and if so is there anything special i gotta do to hook it up.

I’m at work right now not on my home computer..

    Your help is greatly appreciated.

    Are you using wireless?
Are you running through a router?
    Who is your provider?
PM me the results of ipconfig/all(right click the screen and select all, then right click again, it should copy)

in the same window try this "ping www.google.com"
    if it returns something like
    Reply from 72.14.207.99: bytes=32 time=55ms TTL=241

So you are using a laptop at work and taking it home right? What might be happening is that your computer recieves an IP address from the DHCP server at work and it is not renewing the address when you take it home or the IP address was manually entered. When you get home run the CMD command again and type ipconfig /release then type ipconfig /renew. See if that helps.

Is rogers a cable or DSL provider? Is the only network connection from you computer to the DSL or cable modem? If it is DSL do you have to connect to your connection before you use it, kind of like dial-up enter a username and password? it's called PPPOE.

From what I looked up it seems as if Rogers is a cable provider. Here are a few things to try when you get home.

    1. Go to the start menu, click run type in CMD and then type ipconfig /all just as before. If the IP address say 169.x.x.x that means you are not getting and IP address from the DHCP server. Also check the line that say DHCP Enabled.... If it says no, you may need to change your network connection to allow DHCP. (See step 2). If it says Yes try unplugging your cable modem for 30 seconds and turn off your computer. Plug your cable modem back in and allow it to establish a connection. Boot your computer back up and see if you can connect to the internet. If not, run the ipconfig /all again. If it still reports no IP or a 169.x.x.x ip try ipconfig /renew.

    2. Right click on my network places either located on your desktop or under the start menu, depending on if you are using windows 2000 or XP, and select properties. This should bring up all of your Network Connections. The one you want is most likely called "Local Area Connection". Right click on it and select properties. Click on Internet Protocol TCP/IP and click properties. Click Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain a DNS Server address automatically then click OK. You may need to run the IPconfig /renew command after this but, just open up your web browser and see if you can get online.

Just a few things to try when you get home. Did the technician make sure your cable modem was working properly. Could they see you cable modem from their network?

Yah they did all that.. and so did I..but the network connection my computer keeps picking up is designated for a network.. the issue is definately with my computer..

Damn this is frustrating. I wonder what happened while i was gone yesterday to make this happen.... i'm hoping it fixed it self

Like jdspinna said..verify you getting an IP from your provider, and not the windows 169 default.

If its not getting an IP from them, start from the bottom.

1.) Does your computer connect to the modem via cat5 cable or USB?

    2.) TBD from #1 answer

Is the ip address starting with a 192.168.x.x or 169.x.x.x? If it's a 192, then it's probably a static ip address in the computer, if it's a 169, then the computer can most likely not see the modem. PM me, and I can walk you through some troubleshooting if you'd like.

edit: Opps, didn't fully read the thread. Glad you have it fixed.
