Glut 4 is an insulin depend glucose transport protein. It resides in the nucleus of the cell durning fasting conditions (low blood glucose). After a meal blood glucose goes up, which stimulates the beta cells of the pancreas to release insulin. Insulin when presented to the cell causes the glut 4 transporter to move from the nucleus to the cell membrane. This transporter allows for glucose to diffuse into the cell via the transporter. Once Glucose is in the cell it is rapidly converted to Glucose-6-Phosphate so that it stays in the cell. When blood levels of glucose drop and insulin is no longer present. The transporter moves back into the nucleus of the muscle cell.
