Like when you have been ordered not to fit PT in to your working day because you have home risk assesments to do and other menial tasks makes you wonder if the authority actually want able bodied firefighters.

I know its different in the states, where i worked in manchester you woudnt accept anything off anyone incase they had done something with it... like on a house fire id rather die of thirst than take a cup of tea off a neighbour or someone like that. But then again we arent held in the same light of firefighters in other countires.

The only ones who hail us as heroes are the low lifes in society, the middle and upper class people think it is wrong if we are not on emergency calls that we be allowed to sit around the station. Hence we do work just to make us look busy, even if the work does not need doing.

The main reason i Left manchest was because they took beds from stations. Now on a 15 hour night shift you have to keep active and do stuff during the night to keep busy. Some people even get disciplined for for sleeping on a floor in the gym, which nearly resulted in them losing their jobs.
Anyone who worked at a tation thant handled 3000+ thousand fires a year will accept that you need some kind of sleep during the night, even if its an hour or two (between callouts), it makes all the differenece. But like i said the majority are middle and upper class who have never required us so they dont see why we sould earn money for sleeping.

The "fatties" actually call us because we are the ONLY ones who can actually help them. They respect that and they respect us for that... but like i said above, in the UK there are only a few kinds of people who do.

1. People with nothing. (lower class, and some middle)

2. Disabled people

3. Old people (world war era)

4. Lower class Children below 9 yr old. Kids above that age generally hasstle us and throw stuff (bricks, stones etc) at us.
