    Technically there are 46 states.
    Virginia, Kentucky Pennsylvania and Massachusetts are all officially Commonwealths.

    46 is incorrect the us consists of 50 states and 1 district. The continental us consists of 48 states and Washington dc. Plus there is Alaska and Hawaii.
