grunting gives me an edge too - not intentionally to make a lot of noise but the aggression builds up on heavy squats / deads
for me and its satisfying and helps me squeeze out more reps then pretending im in a library - not unusual for me to talk outloud to myself in the middle of a set of heavy squats either to keep the adrenaline up
lol, I have also been doing a lot of both of those lately. I vary from a quite air blowing "te" noise to a all out srceaming "arghhhh". Also pump my self up beore my set with self taunting (what are you...sum kind of pu$$y, lift) and trying to convince myself that its an easy lift. The midset "come on" and "one more" serve me well also.
I go to three different gyms, two are very commercial and one is a muscle gym. I fell so out of place doing that at the commercial gym, I get people I know coming from way over the furthest corner from me, inquiring what is going on, or even from the change room when I'm doing dead lifts. Its a good thing I'm usually lifting a lot more than the people around me or I'd look like a total dick. I have tried being quite but it really affects, my lifts.
Also, the two commercial gyms I train at have 45kg dumbbells at one, and 50kg at the other. The muscle gyms dumbbells go up to 70kg.

hah very similar - - - - start pacing back and forth with my head nodding up and down to the mp3 player mumbling something like "lets go....cmon lets go....show em what you got...."
then trying to close my eyes to goto a different place...getting into the zone it a lot of work
