not always good
usually means your problem is at your patella such as a problem with the way it tracks over your femur or even softening of your cartilage surface. The pain should have indicated to you to stop putting stress on it. The tendons are unhappy. Could also indicate arthritis. I'm betting you find the problem to be chronic, and unless they're is a bursa to be removed can be a difficult fix surgically unlike a small meniscus tear. most likely you still have problems with the knee for a long time or forever.

i read everything you said....but i'm not going to just assume i need surgery.....not only would that make it so i couldn't train for a vast period of time....i have no health insurance and couldn't pay for it

Your mind is far to simple for me to explain ortho medicine to. Never mind, rub a puppy and some rose petals on your knee, then you should be good to go.

Or if you want any hope of it rectifying itself. Rest it, and I mean for like 4 weeks or more, take ibuprofen 2x daily and ice it, and throw in some glucosamine for grins an giggles.
