You know what sucks, I have that ringing sensation in my left ear 24/7. It's called Tinitus, and I've had it for about 5 years now. Must have been the Metalica, Motorhead, and Van Halen concerts I hit in the 80's.

Yeah, 5 years, tell me about it. The first year will just about drive anyone crazy (I know). After that, you adapt, and you find ways to manage and live with it. Luckily, when I fall asleep, I'm out and it doesn't effect me. I've been to several specialist and it's definite damage. In fact, I'm deaf at the 13,000-14,000hz range, which is because that's the pitch noise I hear all the time.
The best thing to do at those concerts is to wear some foam ear plugs. Truthfully, you'll hear the music just fine, 100%, but you'll prevent some potential permanent damage like Tinnitus.
