He simply was not looking to get in a fight.
I think Mike gets given the wrong impression, but IMO Ronnie "dating" that girl is a bad move. She dropped Mike in a second to get with Ronnie because he's a better looking guy. Ronnie will get dropped eventually too, because there will be a better looking guy around some day.
I don't blame Mike for still hitting on the girl either. Ronnie never had any consideration for Mike in the "situation" (pun intended) and was excited to pick up some left overs.
In the same sense, you could say Mike was thinking with his head, when he tried to defuse the problem at the bar with the guys stealing shots from them. He bought the guys the shots to avoid a conflict, but Snookie was just not okay with it. But instead, it was his fault for getting the guy so wasted he blasted a girl.
On a side note, that poor guy is on national TV punching a 4'9" girl in the face. He probably can't go out anywhere with out catching a beating or at least a ear full.
