The method is known as air lock. Its a medical approved method to prevent back leaking from the muscle and to ensure all the medicine enters the body. I do it all the time. Have 0.5-1mL of air behind your gear. This only works when the pin is held verticle, or the air wont do anything.

Don't worry,you need in excess of 100mL of air injected into a blood vessel to cause death from an air embolism, not injected IM.
