    Shark week on Discovery

Anybody watching this? I love the fact that I can pause my DVR and go frame by frame to see close ups at will in HD. Technology is great.

One guy had his calf bitten clean off? They caught the whole thing on camera. They saved him but now he has no calf muscle in the one leg. Still walks around pretty good though.

After they fixed him he decided to go in the water again to see if it was just an 'accident'

Just found out they can sense electrical impulses. When you move your muscle they know you're there by sensing the 'electricity'. How much more badass can these things get?

Sharks are a marvel of evolution. They are perfectly adapted to their enviroment. The electrosensory organs you talk about are actually a modified hair cell called ampullae of Lorenzini. They sense a change in electric polarity in the surrounding water. There is a electrolyte rich solution that comes out of these pores when squeezed. Another amazing thing about sharks is that they have a perfectly helical intestinal track. Meaning they spiral just like a staircase. Shark biology is amazing, as a part of my undergraduate studies I got to dissect probably 10 different species and numerous specimans. Fun Shit if you ask me.

This is a great write-up on why they have hardly genetically changed over millions of years. Highly adaptive specimen in any conditions.

They were here before the dinosaurs by million and millions of years. That should tell you something about them. unfortunately for them they have never faced a pressure on their survival as bad as the human race.

Seems like nature's perfect killing machine has a weakness.. petting lol. This article talks about grabbing a great whites fin and going for a ride. Yes, sounds like a perfectly reasonable idea right?
