Building up the "blocks" of your abdomen will make your abs appear to "pop" out more and will make them more visible and pronounced even while holding a little higher body fat percentage. It may be beneficial to hit your abs in the same way you would any other muscle group.. hard and heavy. I respectfully disagree in regards to your training idea.

Direct abdominal work will not make them appear more visible by any means. Reducing the adipose tissue between the skin and muscle fascia is what makes them appear.
