the best way is to run a lower dose cycle and see what happens, then you will know.
if you track starting weight, bf%, measurements, food intake, etc. when you recheck 1/4, 1/2, at the end and see less bf%, better measurements then you will know you can make gains on less gear. it may be less gains then if you ran a higher dose cycle but then you know you can still make gains on less gear.
the other thing you can do is take a year off from gear and let your body 'reset' and then run gear at a lower dose. you wont be a gear virgin, but it will be more responsive. i had a buddy take 2 years off gear and when he got back on, low dose test e 300mg/week and tren e 100mg/week he put on 10lbs of muscle.
