I have read a few times that lighter skinned blacks are considered more beautiful in the black community, and black woman if they have hair that is more like a white womans hair is better too. Being from San Diego I have not met to many black people so I don't know if a lot of what I read has any truth to it.

Its the mentality perpetuated by whites. Think about it. Think about every black woman most white people consider attractive. They are all light skinned with flowing, long, straight, hair. So if someone told you for your entire life that because you were dark skinned with either short hair or an Afro, or dreadlocks, you aren't beautiful, then what would you think of yourself? And it's not just women. The same applies to black men. When I was growing up, guys like LL Cool J, Will Smith, El Debarge, Prince, etc. were the hot tickets. Dark brothas always had the negative stigma of being more threatening, angry, etc. It still applies today. The Rock will get more opportunities at mainstream movies than Morris Chestnut, even though Morris is a much better actor. In politics its always been said that a lighter skinned black would stand a much better chance than a darker skinned one because of the negative stereotypes attached to dark skinned black men. I guarantee that if Barack Obama and Colin Powell weren't light skinned they wouldn't have had as much political clout. Simply Google black Republicans and you'll see every single one of them aren't much darker than a paper bag.
