Slayer isn't even close to hardcore (the corps this is killing me!), that's straight thrash at it's best. Not trying to start a metal sub-genre debate here, just wanted to set that record straight.

COC, DRI, Bad Brains, etc can be grouped in the hardcore genre.

lol I won't fault you for that! As for Slayer starting the revolution - which are you referring to? They most definitely had a big hand in starting the metal revolution, but they had nothing to do with hardcore whatsoever. Those bands were around before Slayer, and were influenced by 70's punk mostly - Sex Pistols, Black Flag, The Stooges, etc.

Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Agnostic Front, Warzone, etc were at the helm of hardcore.

Don't get me wrong, Slayer is one of my fav thrash bands of all time - notice they're in my top 5 when I started this thread. =)

yeah slayer and metallica def sped things up a bit. the revolution crown would def have to go to sabbath with motorhead def having a big input in the mid 70's also. some will argue tht it all started with hendrix
