I think he is overrated and a puck hog. He is a goal scorer and only plays one way hockey (stereotypical hot shot offensemen). Now, take a look at Alexander Ovechkin. Goal scorer, play maker, brawler, and a real leader. He's 6'3" 245lbs and lays people out on the ice like it's his job. I cannot take anything away from Crosbys talent, but Ovechkin is what I would call an overall team player. (And I'm not a Capitals fan in the least way)
Crosby is a big time scorer, and show up every game. Ovi disappears he lakes heart. All these offensive players who start with only offense later in their carrier they become more defensive . But i think Crosby kills plenty my issue with Ovi is that he disappears some times and not put in effort if things arent going his way and dont get me started on Simmons.
