    I'm surprised no one has mentioned a rottweiller. Rotts look mean and Are great guard dogs. Also very loyal and loving to it's owners.

    i ruled them out in my OP mate, just not inclined towards them at all. i always like to have something unique and diff

    Rotties are good dogs, but breeding is always an issue with these dogs (similar to pit bulls and english bulldogs). There are always some issues with Rotties because of breeding (hip problems, eye problems, tumors, skin issues, etc.). As big a fan as I am of these dogs, I wouldn't risk getting one unless it came from a reputable German breeder.
