He already learned his lesson, so there is no need to say absurd things to scare him further.
Heart disease (arterial plaque buildup) from poor lipids is the sort of thing that takes years (usually decades) to cause problems. You don't just drop dead because your HDL hits 0.
I'm not saying that he didn't shave any time off his life in the long run, just that he was in no immediate danger of dying from heart failure as you said.
