Anyone go out/going out of their way this year for Xmas for someone else?

At work we have a board where we can pick a child who is less fortunate (most of the kids live in the bad part of the city) and have asked for a toy for Xmas. I have a 9 year old boy who asked for a WWE figure. I bought him the entire WWE ring and full set of wrestling figures. Wish i could be there to see his face when he gets it but i am sure him and his parent appreciate it.

I just spent $500 for two little girls I've never physically met before. Mommy is struggling, barely getting by, very proud and won't take money directly, so Santa did some internet shopping for the girls. One is 9 and other is 2

Me and my family "adopt a kid" for Christmas every year. We basically just get their name from a list that the county has of needy children and buy them whatever is on their Christmas list within reason. It's obvious though that the case workers have alot of input on the lists b/c they are mostly things no one would ask for for Christmas - underwear, pajamas, shoes, back packs for school, etc. We make sure to get them the necessities first and them go nuts on the toys and good stuff. This year we got 8yr old twin boys so it should be fun.

Really sad that some kids get underwear and socks for Christmas........

This is what its all about. just knowing that you can directly affect a persons state of happiness because of your giving is awesome.. although you guys (DSM/TR) may not be there when they receive their gifts the fact that you know it will be appreciated makes you inturn just as happy or even more then the actual recipients, therefore being there isnt important.. if everyone would just dare to give and i mean give without Any excuses like "ohh why should I give or thats not my problem, or better yet i cant afford it!!" if your on this site and on a pc Surprise You CaN.. whats 20-30$ if it could change the future of someones christmas or state of mind!.. listen folks their are people out there who have NOTHING and if you think your miserable imagine not knowing how your going to feed a child, who cares if they have put them selfs in that position Did The Child?? any point is GIVE GIVE GIVE and you Will See how your lives will change, hay it does'nt have to be a million just give what ever you can & do it for them not so people can see u or know about!! What's sad is they are happy to get them. Things like that should be a given to any child but we all know we don't live in a perfect world.

Thanks Ecruz. We are surrounded all year with so much negativity that i felt the need to point out the positive when it happens. Sure gestures like this should happen more often than once a year and for most they do but just wanted to shed some light on the good.

This is awesome! Thats what Christmas is all about.

Where I live it's called the Department of Family and Child Services (DFACS). I'm pretty sure most places have something similar even if it has a different name.

My wife does big time.Like last nite she called all over hell for a doll for a niece.Man it was driving me crazy.No one had the thing but a store in Ga.And they didnt do mail order.But my wife dont take no for an answer.So she spend 30 min on the phone trying to get her way.She lost boy was she pissed.I hate to shop I walk in and get wat I need.Now if I am getting a present I am a one stop shopper

This is a great thread dsm.. You inspired me.. I already donated to a food drive but it does seem like a great idea to pick a kid and give him/her Christmas presents.. If I were ever down on my luck, I would hope there was some1 out there like the few who have posted here that would take the time to buy my soon to be born daughter a gift for Christmas if I couldn't.. Just think of how much it would be appreciated..

Through my work and other organizations I have done most of those above, adopt a family or kid off and on for years but not so much recently after reading and see/finding out to many of those are scams. The people applying for those are not screened or many times it's adults pretending to be kids and selling the gifts for $$

I think yer perspective is off a bit... i used to get these items, nothing sad about it.

what's sad is to see a kid get excited at the thought he might get a decent meal instead of having to scrounge through garbage heaps for something to eat

yeah, ive read about alot of donated funds being paid as salaries and expenses to organisations. alot of the money doesnt get to where you're duped into thinking it goes.

in these particular situations, instead of taking the word of another, it is better to experience and judge for oneself.....

LOVE hearing about you guys helping kids have fun for x-mass!
*just a reality check/ heads up... programs that give to needy families are great BUT alot of parents return/exchange the toys they get for their kids...to get something for themselves. I see it alllll the time and it pisses me off!
Make it hard or impossible for shitty parents to do this~ donate a gift that is not in its origanal package or write on the gift in permiate marker "non returnable/exchangabal" and it sounds horrid but be pickey who you drop your gift off too...no leaving it in a bin at a store or with places that say gift must be in origanil package blah blah blah.

...if people are woundering how to get needey kids some gifts (that will go to the kids) donate to your local Dept of child welfare (dcyf/dss ect) presents or gift cards or clothes (clothes are allways needed) get dropped off by case workers with foster families for their foster kids or residental homes(orphanages) for needy kids and if for some reason gifts are left over after (not likely), they go to kidsin the future that get removed from unheathy homes (some kids come with only the clothes they have on...and thats all they have for weeks. A great way to help a kid weather a celebrated day ~that is hard for them cuz most times they are not with their familly and thats just plain sad for them. Group homes / behavioural homes/special needs schools/troubled teen homes/ drug alcohal teen group homes are all dirt poor and the kids are in dilapitated buildings with only the very bare min the programs can afford...donate a game station old tv ect to a home so 15+ kids can all enjoy and is a great incentive to behave for the day... just ideas... even for days not holidays..

Its guys like you all that make families like us & foster kids EXTRA greatful and feel a lill less alone on a day that can be truely hard and heart wrenching
