This really wouldn't be the case in the US. My favorite analogy is the difference between getting caught drinking & driving on base vs. off base. If you get picked up for DUI off base, you lose your license for a long time, pay a ridiculous fine, get probation, and now states have been implementing mandatory jail time. If you get a DUI on base, you will probably lose 1 rank and get some barracks duty, maybe even lose your driving privileges on base for a while. And for those who have higher ranks, penalties for things such as taking steroids will be less severe, depending on people like your Battalion Commander, as they tend to have more respect for your military career.
wow thats the polar opposite of how it is here, very interesting. I suppose because we are under two sets of laws the first part of getting caught as a civilian vs getting caught as military makes sense. I just don't understand the logic behind a higher rank getting less of a penalty for breaking the law than a lower rank. Leadership is supposed to lead by example and getting caught with steroids is the opposite of this. The DUI example works here for the Canadian military aswell. When a pte gets a DUI he suffers the typical DUI penalty, plus extras. When a higher rank such as a section commander gets one, odds are he will lose his section, get demoted and face a much more severe penalty on top of all that. Very interesting.
Also I am not saying one system is better than the other, just comparing the two.
