    Upper intake level for elemental zinc is suggested at 40-50mg. Toxicity related health problems (anemia, impaired iron absorption, kidney failure, decreased HDL) begin at doses ranging from 150-400mg per day.

    At 100mg per day or taking 40-50mg daily for extended periods correlates with a two fold risk of prostate cancer.

    What's considered an extended period? Shoot. I might be in there already...

    That's been debated for years. Many docs argue elemental zinc is unnecessary because there is adequate supply in the food chain. I've seen a few recommendations in the past in nutritional pubs that supplementing should be less than 5 years, others say up to 10 is the max.

    Routine PSA tests would provide some indication of prostate problems, however, as many of us have perhaps seen, anabolics can affect absolute PSA which is why urologists an Oncologists will more often look at PSA velocity (but PSA as a predictor remains somewhat controversial).

    *Note: in our clinics we discourage any zinc usage among prostate patients.

    I will usually supplement 50-100mg for 3-5 days if I'm fighting a virus as zinc upregulates immune responses (sustained uses however will eventually become immunosuppressive).
