Thread: Whey Protein Shake vs Actual Food

    alright so it seems no one has any actual solid evidence of why it is so much more beneficial to eat food instead of taking in protein shakes. Just a bunch of general assumptions and the passage of previously issued knowledge without any critical thought on the matter.

    Here is some critical thought on the matter: protein powder will be absorbed and broken down MUCH quicker than say, a chicken breast. What does that mean exactly? Well, it means that you'll drink your 50g protein shake and the protein will be absorbed in 20-30 minutes and then your body will sit without a protein source for about 2 hours until your next meal....pretty simple to be honest.

    This info isn't from me either, it's my "passage of previously issued knowledge" from my friends bodybuilding nutritionist. I got this info about a month ago too...so I doubt much has changed in terms of research........

    Depending, of course, on the type of protein powder you use. Isolate is quicker than concentrate which is quicker than casein. A combination of these will also have different absorption rates.

    Also, if you are mixing your powder with a carb source, again you are changing absorption rates.

    I tried that argument...still doesn't matter much. What I personally do with my shakes is mix egg whites, iso whey, whey conc, and casein (sometimes I add nuts or a carb source) AND most importantly...I take the full 2 hours to drink it.

    Even then, all of my friends trainers still prefer food over supps, but they admit that if your going to drink shakes then the way I'm now doing it is the best.
