A great documentary on sharing personal info on social networks, notably Facebook. One hell of a reminder of how important it is to watch what you put out for the world to see. Quite sobering.

This is exactly why I deactivated my Facebook.
Yeah I def care what's on the Internet about me for sure. The way I look at it is perception is reality... So someone could look at a picture and assume a whole lot from that. It could effect your career, your personal life, etc. the last thing I need is problems.

Good for keeping in touch with old friends and what not but definitely dont put much up on facebook.

I don't put up controversial status or pictures on there, or much of anything. It is a great way to keep on touch with people that you meet on vacations, etc.

I dont do facebook, twitter, nothing. I typically use movie character names for forums and things.

Lets think about this a second. Computers have advanced to where the average home user PC is more powerful than the computers Nasa was using many years ago to launch space shuttles. Can you honestly say there aren't programs that are archiving all your information for background checks and employment? What I see happening eventually is this, and I really do feel this is already happening for government agencies background checks. A kid makes a social network posting at 17 maybe a dirty joke or whatever. Thirteen years later when he's 30 he is trying out for a government position and the joke is in their database file on him. People have no idea the amount of gross data that is being saved and archived on individuals. I had police called for domestic violence. They took the girl I was dating away for hitting me a real crazy bitch who was trying to kill herself with a knife. A year later I am pulled over in the area and the guy asks me what am I doing in the area and am I seeing the crazy girl. Mind you I was not charged with a crime during the domestic dispute incident but thats how much data is being tracked on you. Its gotten absolutely insane. When I go to buy a bottle of vodka, they swipe or type in my driver license numbers. I could cite many other examples but you get the picture.

I completely agree with you, but have only started to think about the wide spread implications recently. I've always kept the privacy setting on facebook cranked up, but it concerns me to know end that every time they "change" their privacy options everything resets to the bare minimum. I've removed most of my pictures, other than some wedding photos, but the info is still out there. I've even found that even though I closed it MANY years ago, I can still reactivate my Hi5 account from high school, and cannot permanently delete the account. It scares me because they will not respond to emails and have no other form of contact. What really scares me is the amount of information people share without a second thought, much more than I ever have. Our ability to use todays technology safely is lagging far behind the technology itself.

I can give you another good example. When you are browsing the web you see all these sites claiming they can do an instant background check on ANYONE for X amount of dollars. They are archiving every arrest and every conviction ever made. I have a DUI on record. Do I really need to show up at a new job 10 years later and have them pull up my mug shot and info for it? Maybe you say well yes HR deserves that info. What about the guy working in the cubicle to my left. Should he be able to pay $15.99 ten years later to pull up my mug shot and misdemeanor conviction info for shits and giggles? Frankly when you start throwing in charges that are very open to interpretation by the arresting officer like domestic violence, resisting without violence, weed charges, trespassing, etc I have met a fair amount of people who have been thrown in jail for nothing. My point is its becoming a world where you can't even pick your nose without it being logged somewhere and archived.

Um ... Check this out if you go to FINRAs website you can check an investment reps whole criminal, settlement and arbitration record for free and it's available to anyone.... Plus if you're registered anything you do is allowed to be published in the newspaper

Ive never had facebook, so I'm good. Never saw the need. Wife has one, don't like it. I did however have a myspace when it existed. You guys remember myspace?

Myspace was crazy! I had an account there for about 3-4 months. Met a girl there who is cool as hell and we're friends to this day. Flew to Chicago twice to party w/her and she's actually responsible, intelligent woman. But she was the only one. The rest of myspace was straight hook up's i think. I had girls (they asked, not me) getting on web cams doing all kinds of crazy stuff!! I couldn't believe it. But eventually i just got weirded out by some of the stalking a few of them were doing so i just left the place.

I do FB just to keep up w/old friends. I mostly just read posts. Comment only on sports or special occasions.

I'm only on Facebook, but have been using it less and less. It's crazy how some people follow things on there. As a joke, and to see if it would work, me and a few friends posted "RIP Nicholas Cage" and before we knew it a bunch of other people started posting it too.

The thing I don't understand is they obviously had access to the Internet, why not check before throwing it up there yourself lol.

If you have the means I would suggest trying it, it's good for a laugh.
