    Calling on builders

Can you put a tool shed on a few tons of stone as a foundation instead of pouring cement?

It depends on the size of the shed. You should also check with your city hall to make sure your shed meets city ordinances. You don't want to get done building it and then have to tear it down and rebuild it.

I believe if it's light weight and under 10'x20' you can get away with a gravel foundation.

Agreed with HK, depends on size. I have 2 sheds, one 12x28 & 10x16 that are on 4x6 beams and concrete blocks.

We talking stones with no fines? What size stone? bad idea water flows threw stones because of all the air voids so all your water will pool up under your shed unless you get some drainage.

Just de vegetate the ground build up your pad to required height. do you want it battered? dig out your footings.

Im in construction we do this every day.

I need to no how big the shed is going to be and what type of ground is it? Im assuming natural ground clay? silty clay?

It will def be under 10'x20'. I am thinking 10'12' for mower and storage. I am not building it but will have it prebuilt then just dropped off. I am going to do the foundation myself. Its a really tight spot to get a concrete truck access which is why I was thinking gravel foundation.

gravel should be okay. Just make sure you give yourself 2' clearance in each direction so there is enough drainage under the shed. Still contact city hall and ask about all the building codes that pertain to sheds.

Can use a pipe for drainage or just build on sand

i'd be more worried about the bottom, some sheds do not have a floor.. if that's the case it should be fine.. the real issue is are you allowed to have a building in your back yard.. building permits will not normally be required if you are allowed to have one in your yard.

Need to check your local ordinance and home owners association. Make sure it's far enough away from the property line also. I'm lucky (knock on wood) my neighbors dont complain because I know both of my sheds are to big for no permit and one is to close to the property line.

All permits aside. You are basicly talking about a small utility shed from a home improvement store loke Lowed or Home Depot. My first choice would be concrete and for this you could easily wheel barrow in the concrete from a truck or rent a mixer. The other option would be crushed limestone wich makes a fine floor.

You are not really talking about the foundation as it would be a floating slab or rock floor. If it HAS its own floor of plastic or green treated plywood then you have the option of setting it directly on the ground although I would still poor concrete.

I am not worried about the permit. Just want to make sure that sitting the shed on a gravel foundation will be ok.

Yes...it will be fine. It is light enough and the gravel will offer drainage.

The other option to consider would be pavers..bit mor expensive.

If you choose gravel the again, consider crushed limestone. You can form it and pack it leaving a very silid floor for your shed

Make sure to pack (tamp) the dirt, put down the stone, wet a little and pack. Then you could do a flat block when you get the shed under the corners and whatever supports the middle. Gravel works well keeping moisture from building under the floors.

^^This is exactly what I did. I didnt even put dirt down, just put on lawn with pressure treated foundation on blocks that are a couple inches thick. Been a couple years, sos far so good. Only issue is an animal can get under there, so I think this year I will border it with stones or pavers so they cant get under it.

BTW DSM did you ever post a picture of your new house?

I am in the market for a 2nd house. Ill rent out the one I'm in now for a while before decided if I want to see it or not.

I put in bids on 2 HUD homes but got outbid. Going to look at an identical model Saturday. Normal sale but I may have to pay a little more than originally planned if I want it. Market is on the up swing here. Interest rates are great though.

3000+ sq foot. 8yr old, gated community, no neighbors in back overlooking valley, gold course, river. This is the style of house. Wish me luck.Click image for larger version.

My 12x16 with a loft and double doors was $2500 built on my lot.
This is the same as mine minus the windows. I have a pull down ladder inside for easy access to the loft that runs the whole length of the shed. Also mine is on 6x8 beams.

If it's prebuilt then dropped in place it will have a floor in it......gravel is fine, dirt is fine, whatever is fine as it will likely come sitting on treated 4x4s or the like.... no worries DSM
