    At the gym today............

........and I was watching this young bull on the bench going for a 1RM at three plates. Took it off the cradle, began to lower the weight, paused, pushed the weight up about 1/3, then the bar started coming down quick. His buddies were joking around and really not paying attention. About an inch from his throat his spotters stopped the bar from crashing all the way down. I'm sitting there quietly the whole time watching this fiasco.

Guys, if you are going to fuk around with weights that are heavy for you, either hit up the smith machine, or make double damn sure your spotter buddies are paying attention. This could have been a real disaster.

There, now I'm getting down from the soapbox....

I agree people need to actually pat attention when they are spotting others instead of hanging out. The guy might as well have been working out by himself.

If I workout with one on one or even three if someone is not willing to be apart of my set with me, I don't need them and will not train with them. A few months ago I walk out on these two guys. I didn't work with them for a few days, kinda cold shoulder. They came to me and asked why I wasn't training with them. I said because you are not training WITH ME. I don't want my bar to stop and you catch it and I expect you to help me get into a negative past failure and I expect your head to be inside my head at the time of my lift. ...crazy mike

I used to bench heavy by myself at home. Maybe ten years+ ago. I missed my last rep, and was really in a precarious spot not being able to reset. Had to holler for my woman to come bail my sorry ass out. Good thing she could hear my shouts.....

I spent my first many years lifting without a spotter in my basement and had a couple bad lifts..... Learned to never use clips and still refuse to on just about any lift... "Except for log press" had a bad lift bc of not having a clip.... Won't do that one again either.... Lol I'm sure if you spend enough time lifting weights things like this are inevitable.... "Kinda like busting fingers on dumbbells left on floors when setting down weight" hahahahaha

OMG , can't believe you said that. In 1981 I was putting down a barbell loaded, to the floor from the bench. I slammed it all the way to the floor still in grip. There was a dumbbell under it and I literally (smashed) popped like a large pimple the end of my middle finger off. It exploded. Nothing to reattach. S it is just a little short. When lifting in the dumbbell room I don't sit down to lift with ANY weights, ANYTHING on the floor around me. It still freaks me out when dropping my hands down with weight. ...cm

I hate working out with other people. They slow the process down, talk to much, think they are motivating when they are only being annoying. I'm there to work out and I bust my ass every rep of every set. If you are not pushing yourself stay at home.

One on one is good for me, three is way to many. But I like a full time trainee and trainer so to speak. It keeps a good timing for me cause I'll go to slow at my age. I do the best I can. ...cm

I'll take the smith over a human any day. People suck. All most of them want to do is flap their gums.

Anytime I was being spotted for bench I would always tell the guy to move closer to the bench so I could look up his shorts.

I think just a few years ago there was a college football player that almost ended his career when the bar dropped on his throat. Had to have major surgery ...

Other people just aren't as religious or serious about training as I am. At least not in my group of friends, if I need a spot there's a few big guys that are there every day when I am. Ill just ask them

I work ot alone so use smith to save my ass. YEars ago in my basement I failed to get a bench up and had it on my chest with no clips. Leaned it to dump weight off one side. Let me tell you when the weight dropped of one side that bar catapaulted out of my hands due to weight on other side, scary as hell. Also failed to get a squat up years ago. Luckily the rack was one of those upside down V shaped ones with the pegs to hold the bar, so I got in back on rack as I was going down, could have been a disater. Older advanced lifter tore my ass up for not having a spotter!!!

I had a guy at an LA Fitness ask me to spot him on a Hammer Strength Leverage V-Squat Machine.
