Thinking about doing my lifting at home, thoughts?

Hello everyone! Well I'm thinking about starting to lift at home. The main reason is my gym only has 1 power rack, and I hate guessing if I'm going to get to use it. I'm looking at starting a new program that really consists of squats, deadlifts, bent rows, and chest press. I'm looking to increase my overall strength.

Who all prefers working out at home? Also can anyone recommend a decent power/squat rack? My basement is like a dungeon, so good place for all out business!

Please post picture of your setup if you'd like!

I prefer the gym. I feel like im getting away, and going somewhere to do one thing, work-the-fuk-out.
    But good luck.

I prefer home, no waiting for equipment and the guy that works out there always racks his weights.

This is the power rack I have - Amazon.com: BodyCraft F430 Power Rack: Sports & Outdoors I also got an extra set of hooks and the dip bars (kinda cheap feeling)

I have a mismatch set of plates totaling 430#, a nice rogue bar and a cheap curl bar from dick's sporting goods. I also have dumbbells up to 65#.

Go on craigslist and look for some fat guy that bought his crap on new years and now just wants to get rid of it. You can find iron for under 50 cents a pound and racks pretty cheap if you aren't too selective. I bought mine new but if I was patient I could of got one a lot better priced.

Thanks for the link, looks like a pretty good one. I just talked to a friend who can't lift much anymore due to injuries. He has a squat rack, preacher curl bar, straight bar, and not sure how much weights. But I'm checking it out tomorrow. I'll also be keeping an eye on craigslist.

For the most part I like going to the gym, for the fact that I'm leaving the house. I may keep my membership active though for awhile just to make sure the home lifting works out. I just get sick of the squat rack being used all the time preventing me from getting my workout done.

Short on time but I've lifted from home for about 10 years now. Love it. Especially since I also work from home. Watch for gym's going out of business as well as what Brett said. Gyms that are closing seem to advertise there.

That's a pretty good setup! Do you use any type of rubber mats?

I think as long as you can avoid the distractions of home life then it should work fine.

Look close at his picture, looks like he has the floor covered.

Definitely a nice home gym. Remember you don't have to buy it all at once.

Jealous lol. Wish I had this at my house and you work from home I would love that as well. I have a squat rack bench with some free weights and a home gym system mainly use it for tricep pull downs and lat pull downs.

Start with the heavy floor covers. Don't get them from a gym or anywhere near a fitness store. Buy them from a tractor supply store or something similar. They'll be half price. Farmers seem to use them in stalls, etc.

With my son just a baby still, I lift at home more now. Not as good a setup as Kel but I make it work. Sometimes I just have to stick to certain workouts at home.

For flooring go to Rubber Gym Flooring | Exercise and Kid Foam Mat | Dance Floor | Martial Arts Mats | Greatmats and get the rubber flooring. It's only $1.35/sq. ft. so it's super cheap but really durable. You simply glue it down and you're good to go.

That 1.35 sq ft is for the 1/4 inch though. That's pretty thin.

I have looked at those tractor supply stall mats and almost pulled the trigger on them the last time I was there. $40 for a 4x6 mat (24 sq ft) and that's 3/4 inch thick. That's my area code price anyways. No gluing or anything, just drop them down. And, you know they're tough, they're made for horse stalls.

My cousin started lifting at home after he had his kids. He loves being able to workout whenever he wants, and he has a really nice basement gym fully loaded. I would love to build a home gym just so I have other options, however the price of the equipment isn't cheap, I would look into some used stuff on local listing pages, you can find great deals.

Edit : I didn't see the flooring part. I bought heavy foam tiles that interlock at a dollar per sq ft on rubber flooring dot com.. Worked incredibly well and handles the abuse of me slamming my heavy bag an alot of movement ( I have a nice boxing area in my basement now )

The site also offers alot of other stuff for a little more money. I bought the tiles cause I can just pick then up when I move

Love the ones I have. Basically bulletproof. Plus half the price of a fitness store.
