    serious pain!

so, I was doing heavy dumbell pullovers this morning and felt (and heard, i think) a "pop". felt like it was in the middle of my chest. It was uncomfortable, but I finished the exercise and did the rest of my back workout. It was uncomfortable, but not what I would describe as a shooting or debilitating pain. I got in the shower and things headed south in a hurry. My chest is absolutely killing me. feels like a spike being driven through the right/middle of my chest and out between my shoulder blades. The thing that hurts worst is breathing and bending or twisting. Coughing is excruciating. I've had broken ribs and this makes them look like a birthday party. Any clues?

I have had this happen to me various times. My chiro said it was a rib out of alignment(kind of over lapping another) If this is what you have it does hurt like a bitch. Can you feel around a certain rib and notice the pain worse?

not really. it is pretty high up in my chest where the muscle is thick. it kind of radiated around under my arm and then back behind the shoulder; but the chest under the pec is definitely the worst. I usually just suck it up, but I'm gonna go to the doctor if i can drive. seriously, just breathing is difficult. getting in and out of a chair is extremely painful.

Sounds like a muscle slipped and maybe a sprain. It got worse in the shower due to the heat causing more inflammation. Ice it. No heat for at least 3 days if not more.
Ice 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off, repeat 3x in a row and 3x a day.

After it's healed work on form because it sounds like you are doing something wrong.

thx guys. went to the chiropractor. first time to see one. he said several ribs were out of place. lots of inflamation. probably not cartilage. It still hurts like hell, but not as intense. I may try to run tomorrow or friday, but i think lifting is out till monday.

I thought it sounded like a rib out. Glad you got it figured out bro. Take it easy for a while and heal.

I've got ribs that pop out and have to be put back in all the time so I know the feeling, and I've also torn a pec.

    Two completely different feelings.

With the torn pec, each "rip" of the muscle let the bar drop even tho I had the gas peddle down, and you could feel the muscle just "going away" as the bar dropped, there was no pain DURING the tearing.

After the weight was pulled off me by the time I sat up I already had bruising going down my shoulder, and that is when the pain set in. I was screwed for like 3 years so I got fat.

This was like 10 years ago and to this day I have a big lump in my chest, it was my pec minor that let go so still have a lot of chest strength. My bench is in the 300's but the lump is still there. I expect that it will be there for the rest of my life.

When you rip a muscle loose there is no question of what just happened. If I ever have it happen again I'm going right away for surgery, I waited way too long before I went for an MRI.

That's been my experience with severe injuries, too. The pain didn't really start until later. That was one of my concerns this time - there was early discomfort, but no severe pain until later. Of course, with the severe injuries I also experienced complete failure of the muscle/joint, which didn't happen this time.

it still hurts, but is definitely better today. Hoping I can lift a little next week and go back to heavy training the week after.

If it's a complete "rip off the bone" like what I had it doesn't, has to be re-attached via surgery.

It happened a long time ago but I'll never forget it.

pain is better, but still bad enough to keep me out of the gym. worst area seems to be beneath the pec, about 1" below the colar bone and 2" to the right of the sternum.headed back to the chiropractor today.

It can take weeks for this type if injury to heal. Bite the bullet and take time off.

I'm giving it a week from today. if I can't get after it, I'm going to have to stop the cycle, start PCT and just give up for a few weeks. this sucks.
