Documentary tells the story of Dick Proenneke who, in the late 1960s, built his own cabin in the wilderness at the base of the Aleutian Peninsula, in what is now Lake Clark National Park. Using color footage he shot himself, Proenneke traces how he came to this remote area, selected a homestead site and built his log cabin completely by himself.

I’ve seen bits and pieces, awesome reminder to track it down and watch the whole thing. I’m in awe of men like him. Makes me laugh at our first world problems and realize just how far we’ve digressed with the advent of technology. How we’ve poured all of energies into things like cell phones, WiFi and automatic bill pay...kind of ridiculous when you think about it. I know for damn sure, I wouldn’t survive a winter on my own in the Aleutian Peninsula.
As a society, I wish these types of folks were celebrated (instead of some ridiculous Kardashian or other Hollywood types).

Now where’s my axe?!
