startes BOUNCING yesterday, any advice?

I started bouncing at this club last night. Had about 900 people there with about 7 bouncers working. Supriseingly I was the biggest one. Im 6'0 230. But they had some big muthers that came in.

I know a couple guys on this board are bouncers, And I was wondering if you can give me any advice? Best way to deal with drunks? Best way to get through a crowd?

Had to throw out a couples sloppy drunks and troublemakers. Ive been in a lot of bar/streetfights. But what shook me up was a smaller (180 lb maybe) drunk guy we were escorting out had ****ing brass knuckles on and I didnt even see them at first!! other bouncer had to tell me. Well anyway this asshole starts threating us but eventually he leaves. A couple others threatened us as soon as they got outside. I felt weird not attacking when threatened, but we are supposed to fight only as a last resort.
ALSO THE FINE ASS WOMEN WERE INCREDIBLY HOT AND THEY SEEM TO LIKE BOUNCERS!!!!!!!!!

ALWAYS know where the other bouncers are and make sure they ALWAYS know where you are.

It's always better to convince somone to leave on their own. A good bouncer gets in few phyical altercations.

Chicks will cause you more problems than dudes.

Are you sure? 900 patrons and 7 doorstaff ? I wouldn't even consider working there unless the clientelle is entirely uptown suitwearing Wall Street types and you are making big $$$ on float. You are accepting a big risk. A normal club of 400-500 capacity should have a minimum of a dozen guys on staff, depending on the physical layout of the buidling.

Well the place has prob a 900 capacity
maybe there werent that many peeps, but it was crowded, and there were about 8-9 bouncers.
It it a college club/bar with an older crowd (seniors and grad students), they do lots of concerts. Its a big place but pretty classy compared to most university hangouts. The crazy **** happens at the bars on the other side of campus. The younger crowds go there.
The other bouncers tell me that there are rarely fights.

Girls will give me more problems??

Like Patrick said in Roadhouse...be nice... I know it sounds stupid, but it really helps. I used to work security at the civic center and I found if you respect people you will have less physical confrontations, but if you act like a tuff guy asshole, then you will put people on the defensive. and try to never get too close to someone unless it's time to put your hands on them... some people are quicker than they appear and you don't want to be looking for your teeth at closing time.

Always take control of the situation quickly. If a fihght starts grab the people and take them out of the crowb quickly. With that light of a bouncer to patron ratio you want to get the trouble out of the crowb. It never turns out good if you try to work it out sorrounded by all those people.

Only time I ever got hit was when a fight broke out and I grabbed one guy and tried to hold him while we figured everything out. His friend busted my nose all over my face.

I bounced in NY when I was much younger!
It sounds like they don't have enough guys and enough big guys at your place!

Soon you will get to know which of the bouncers you're working with can handle themselves and any issues that come up.
I would always seek another bouncer before I attempted to cool a guy down and when I did that I was so sweet you wouldn't beleive it. Ususally works 99% of the time, but every so often you just may have to show what you got!
Remember though, your real job is to go home everynight in one piece!

my advice: communicate effectively, if ur a dick when throwing someone out who's already tanked, it just gives him more incentive to take it a step farther. be polite but stern and talk, it's that simple. occassionally there are the few that don't listen, and in that case, make sure you've got your back covered cuz those fuks always have a gaggle of friends waitin to pounce on ya. bottom line: be nice till it's go time, then get mean enough that no ones gonna be able to stop ya.

Listen to Mighty Joe and don't be a hero! It's just not enough money to put yourself right out on the line for, wait for another bouncer or two before going into a situation, not only will this give you better odds if the fight gets rough, but if the police get called in by one of the punters claiming that you assaulted him, then you've got your witnesses who will be on your side to back you up, you only need to be found guilty of assault once and you can kiss your new bouncing career goodbye! And you don't want to do that, because it is a lot of laughs and a lot of women. As you said fighting is the last resort, this is standard practice these days anywhere. You should try to use your inter-personal skills far more than your fists, it's safer in many ways.

first, it's natural not to attack when threatened, so don't worry about it, 7 months from now you'll fit right in (we have been raised in society where we fear the law and naturally obey it, people are less willing to be violent because of that fact)

now, at our bar I'm the head bouncer and we have a policy... if the guy has a weapon (and is threatening us) i deal with it, he get's beat down and thrown in the dumpster we have in the back (btw, we break some of his fingers so it's harder for him to get out)

now, eventually after you start knocking people out, your gonna get some rematches, BUT after you win these they still want to play games... now despite what you may think, these aren't fun games, infact... there mean games.

they'll wait for you at the end of the night by your car with bats... what i do, is I keep a sharpe, thick machette in the staff washroom and if they wanna play games we can play games - it'll be doctor, and i'm the surgeon

These guys are right. Try to be nice at first it does ussually go along way. But if it doesn't work DO NOT hesitate to get physical. If you wait it gives the more time to think or others to get involved. Just jack'em up and get them out before they have time to re-act back.
