What causes High or Low Prolactin levels?
Prolactin is a single-chain hormone closely related to growth hormone. It is secreted by "lactotrophs" in the anterior pituitary.
The most common cause is:
hypothyroidism- a condition in which an inadequate amount of thyroid hoemone is produced
Other conditions that can cause it is chronic kidney failure & tumors of the pituitary gland but these causes are rare
Main drug used is Bromocriptine- suppresses prolactin production
All info attained from A.S.R.M. American Society for Reproductive Medicine
How would you know if you have puffy nips from Prolactin or Progesterone? Not on a cycle just have them, and trying to find a cure...I heard Selegine HCL/ Vitex.
That's what I read so if I'm not lactating I should be fine on Prolactin levels right? Then that must not be the cause of Puffy nips. Now what about Progesterone, could this be the culprit?
It is the main hormone that stimulates lactation in the breasts. Prolactin has other functions as well though and so it is present in both men and women, but in higher concentrations in the latter of course.Originally posted by Tennis_God
i always thought prolactin had to do with a pregnant woman, and with milk production?![]()
wow the things that go on in AROriginally posted by Nathan

an unrelated interesting PRL fact.. sucking a womans nipples stimulates production of prl, this prl has a negative feedback on GnRh in the hypothalamus which causes less fsh and lh to be released from the pituitary which prevents ovulation; this in turn decreases fertility....
this method of birth control is used in countries that don't have normal means of contraception (ie condom)
