My daughter (10yrs old) wants to take Guitar lessions. Anyone here play, have taken or even give guitar lessions who could give me some guidelines to watchout for in looking for a school/teacher.

You better give her what she wants.
I've been playing for 16 years and have only had one formal lesson. That being said, I would start her with classical lessons on a nylon stringed full sized guitar (if she's got long enough arms to reach the frets and strings). If she learns to read music correctly and can play classical, she can easily move into some difficult flamenco styles. Also, "rock" lessons and electric guitar for the beginner is BS. She'll be able to improv the rock styles on her own if she has a good base of classical knowledge.
I am having to go backwards and learn to read music as I relied on my ear for so long.
I have been playing for 3 years. I definitely think a full size guitar would be too big. You should get a her a 3/4 size guitar. I learned the basics from a friend and then was self taught from then on.
Grappler she reads music, thanks for the info.
I play, I basically tought myself, I had 3 lessons that were completly bogus. I suppose being that young though you'd need a teacher.
but I say start her off with a sick 7 string full size tuned down to A with some nice distortion baby. bwhaha KoRn pwns.
haha the 3/4 size or beginner acustic with nylon would be a good idea like said above
i just started playin a couple months ago ....... pretty much teachin myself ...... i say u should get her one
the best i found learning was just listening to your fav songs, and getting the tabs and playing them
get her a teacher that way she could get sick of it and drop out later.
If u dont give her a teacher, she'll hate u forever for not getting her one lol
i play..have been for 16 yrOriginally Posted by BOUNCER

I've played since I was 7 years old. Find a teacher that teaches what she wants to play and then let it takes it own course. If she grasps what she likes first then she can take where ever she wants from there. The fact that she can read is a major plus so she can communicate with other musicians!
Oh yeah, if she starts to show some decent progress and consistency....than by all means you and her Mother can start "pushing" her to GO FOR IT!

If they teach out of the book and songs like shoo fly shoo then get out. If they teach strumming patterns first along with simple cords then the teacher will have your daughter more interested to make this a life-long hobby. Kids have to play something in order to keep the interest sparked. All my opinion.
