GAYLORD, Michigan (AP) - Phil Mickelson has pulled out of the next week's ING Par-3 Shootout, a usually laid back event that he says he can't even pretend to have fun at after his collapse at the U.S. Open.
Mickelson had a double-bogey on the last hole of last weekend's tournament, allowing Geoff Ogilvy to win the U.S. Open by one stroke at Winged Foot Golf Club.
He said that made him decide not to compete in the ING Par-3 Shootout at Treetops Resort on Monday and Tuesday as he has for the past seven years.
"It's always about having fun, and I didn't think it was fair to the event to act like I could have a lot of fun right now," Mickelson said Friday in a statement.
He will be replaced by Chris DiMarco, who has played on two President's Cup teams and the 2004 Ryder Cup squad. Andy North, Fred Couples and Craig Stadler are also expected to compete.
Mickelson is part owner of the Treetops Resort in Gaylord with his friend and swing coach Rick Smith.
Mickelson has five runner-up finishes and is second on the all-time money list for the event at $960,000. He earned $50,000 last year for five closest-to-the-pin shots.
