School Teaching in NYC

I have a college buddy who is considering taking a position in the NYC public education system. We discussed the opportunity a couple of times and we really don't know anyone who lives in NYC or went through Public schooling there. He and I are basically wondering what the school system is like? Do they have a troubled system, violence and so on. Primarily, he will be teaching high school math. Anything that anyone can say about the school system would be nice. We've heard of some of the really rough neighborhoods in NYC (possibly rumor) such as the Bronx and Harlem...but there are nicer locations also. Chances are that my buddy will be placed in one of the rougher schools, or so I'd imagine. Thanks.

Pretty much. The thing with NYC neighborhoods change very quickly. Everything is packed closely together. You can in a nice area and walk two blocks and be in the projects. *Not saying all public housing is bad.*

Harlem is not bad. It's changed.

One of my old roommates is a school teacher. I don't think they get to pick where they work. At least she couldn't. She was hired and then told where she was placed.

Really depends on what area of the city you will be working. There are some really nice and sh!tty areas like any city. Even if you are placed in a bad area for teaching that doesn't mean that you have to live by the school.

I have heard that some of the housing is quite nice for teachers. In fact there is a building on the corner of 72nd and 5th ave that has a few floors in it just for housing for teachers. Hard to get into but a great location, if not one of the best in the city.
