Any one ever been to Fiji?

I'm in San Diego and I keep seeing advertisements for vacations to Fiji lately and I'm thinking about doing it. One article said that you can stay in Hostel like hotels for about $15 a night.

I'm thinking about just packing up a backpack with my board shorts, flip flops, some t-shirts and a couple little things and kinda of just "walk the earth" so to say, just see where I get taken to.

I'm also most likely going alone. It's going to be hard to find some one else that likes to travel like that and plus the plane ticket alone is going to be $1,000-$1,500 from what I've been seeing so far and that's pretty steep for some of my friends. I used to think it was weird when people told me they went on vacations alone but every single one that I knew that did it said it was a blast. It forces you to be outgoing and to meet people and that's what I want to do.

So back to Fiji, any one ever been there? Is it safe to travel? How do they feel about Americans there? Just any info anyone has will be great.

Also, if any one knows a good travel book or website about Fiji I would love to know.

just seen an advert in paper for flights, 7 days accomodation, 3 meals a day, all alcohol including spirits for $1400aus, im going in dec. as for travelling alone im leaving for europe in 12 days for 3 months, i agree should be a blast
