i need to start a portfolio but it needs to be printed in A3.

What kind of document is it? Text only or text and graphics.
If text export the text and reimport into Publisher.

text and photos, but i can just print the photos out and paste them in the spaces.
i thought you could do it in word by going to page setup- then paper and scrolling down to A3, but A3 isnt an option anymore just letter, legal, and A5.
maybe if i use a custom size and measure and enter the size of an A3 sheet that might work.
could also be because the pc isnt connected to an A3 printer.

i dont have one, but theres some at uni.

go download open office www.openofice.org its free and fully compatible with ms office infact u can even save stuff as .doc's the word type proggy called writer and it lets you select a3 paper size in page layout then send it to a floppy and take it to uni,bish-bosh-bash
