Personal trainers......

Should they be held to higher standards?? Here in the Hamptons we have some half ass trainers, you can tell they dont train or really eat well. I wouldnt hire someone to train me that doesnt live the lifestyle. Does it matter, would you care?

And I can't even walk into a 24 hour fitness or similar places because of their pudgy trainers telling me how to lift, what I should do... One fattie came up and said I'd have a great physique if I could bring up my legs.

I lost it and told that dumbass I'd just had reconstructive knee surgery; he never bothered me again.

I have seen so many trainers with great resumes that can't get results out of clients to save their life. The trainers who train hard and don't have as great resumes do relatively well. The trainers who have both do the best.

When you are a trainer you have to be able to interpret the facial and muscular responses of clients appropriately. You need to be able to sense when enough is enough and when the client is bullshitting. To do this you need to be put through it yourself.

There's also the safety aspects of being able to tell when someone is gonna pass out on the squat rack because of the lack of blood flow to the brain. Without going through that yourself then you wouldn't know the difference between a normal blink and someone who is blinking because things are getting hazy.

You also need to know when to call it quits. I have stopped some sessions at the beginning and sent clients home because stretching in the beginning didn't go the way it should.

ha wow i bet he felt like a douche. I think a lot of them around here (so cal) stay away from people like me and others who obviously know what they are doing. They honestly do not even look me in the eyes lol and i am a little fuker non intimidating looking. But i work out at 24 hour fitness dunno if its different at that type of gym compared to others. I honestly think the are a joke, its sad to say but its true.

Certainly a good physique for a personal trainer is free advertisement and I think most people would want a trainer that actually looks in shape. On the flip side some of the best coaches/trainers in whatever sport aren't the greatest at it themselves but have a wealth of knowledge.

I agree with you guys, I mean theres one girl who sits there looking around the whole time, when her person is finished she moves her to a new machine then looks around again. Theres no rhime or reason to what they do. They wonder why they cant keep customers.

Do different gyms have certain certifcations you need, or can they put anyone out there as a trainer? I have no idea.....

Good trainers are out there but they usually go private once they get a good enough rep. Or they open up their own place.

Everyone must understand that 99% of peoples' goals is not to get big. The people on this board want to get big but very few people who go to get training want to get big.

I wouldnt care what they looked like so long as they had a proven track record and I personaly knew people who had used them. I think like said the real legit trainers are not at your typical gym

I would do this also or even if they once were for real into training but are older now.......oldschool guy that competed.

I love seeing these trainers having there clients balance on balls doing rotator cuff exercises on the cables. I keep waiting for one of them to get seriously hurt. I feel bad seeing kids come in who obviously want to learn how to train and build some muscle and end up hiring one of these garbage trainers.

Here in aus it took me a good 2years to honestly find a good pt, someone who didn't just look good on paper with there fancy resume or 4years of pt courses, but someone who had been there done it themselves, most pt's here are scrawny, pretty boys who are more worried about there hair then ever lifting a weight, I personally couldn't ever listen to what they have to say.

here at my local gym the trainers start at 13 per hour and can work up to 17 an hour....i know 2 trainers who work with college and professional athletes and the more expensive of the two is $200 an hour

I love the Personal Trainer I use. He charges $50/hr, not cheap for a student but he has tons of experience. sortof reminds me of Marcus :S. He's trained everyone from older women looking to do resistance/strength training to semi-pro bodybuilders. He's trained people on cycle and done cycles himself. Has two books published. Not famous by any means but still is very knowledgeable in the field.

Personally, i'd be skeptical of a PT that's completely out of shape. They may be an encyclopedia in the gym, but if they don't practice what they preach i'd have a problem w/ that.

When I did my PT training course there were about 20 of us on it....

No word of a lie, I was the only one who had a clue about anything... They were a bunch of muppets with almost zero training background...

I would turn up with my cool pack and all my food and people didn't get it! WTF man

In the gym was a joke and it was clear to see these guys had never done any real training... All had bad form and not a clue about any exercises...


Whenever people talk about PT's I just shake my head.... Anyone can be a PT in the UK and the gyms are full of crap PT's....

I go into some Gyms and it makes me angry...


I was once DL'ing in the propped way (IMO and many others) pulling the weight up and dropping the weight down... I then had some fat girl who had probably never done a DL in her life come and tell me how to do it the way she was taught on her BS training course....


I pick up friends and family and take them for a free training session and after they set that they have learnt 10x more in that one session than they have ever learnt with the other PT's thy have had...

There are obviously good PT's out there and they are normally BB's or at least have an intrest in BB'ing

The ones in the UK what I know and have seen are full of crap. They have no idea what they are doing or saying and if anyone wants to learn anything about building muscle tissue and cutting bodyfat seek someone who looks the part and who's done it, or at least been there and done it. Anyone can get the qualification but not everyone knows how to train,eat correctly and implement the right supplements.

I see guys in the gym who have been training for over 10 years and still have no idea what they are doing, then they come over and ask me "how do I get big" yet these guys watch me but take no notice how I train. Many think its all about drugs, some even have the nutrition in order but many don't know how to train and design and intense training protocol what stimulates serious muscle growth.

I haven't read all of the posts in this thread, just saying.

I myself am a personal trainer. I started instructing bootcamp classes and teaching clients when I was 15. By age 16, I was ISSA certified and life was great. I didn't know to many kids my age who had accomplished so much (on top of school). I've been in the buissness now for over 4 years and I can tell you forsure, the trainers that actually workout, diet, and live the lifestyle they preach are best.

I am a HUGE (cannot stress this enough) believer that you should listen to your own advice. It makes you better for personal reasons, and your clients seem to like you more and listen to you. If you're not in an athletic shape, you have no right to be telling others how to get into shape.

I just thank god that I live in America and I'm around a bunch of fat lazy people who are willing to give me money . But in all seriousness the thing that makes me the happiest mother fvcker is when my clients get the results they wanted. I just measured one of my clients this mourning. Only three weeks into our training program and she is already down 10 pounds and 2% bf.

Overall, its all about finding the right trainer to push you and to set you in the right direction. Inside the gym, or in your kitchen.

I think it all depends on the client. For the average, overweight, out of shape individual coming to the gym trying to get started, I think some guy who is ripped and massive would be intimidating. On the other hand, I am creating a lifestyle around sculpting my body, and if I were looking for a trainer I would want someone who had years of experience living that lifestyle, and I would want to be able to tell by looking at him (or her). Some trainers just need to show the new people around and teach them how to use the basic equiptment, while others need to help serious body builders take it to whatever the next level is for them.

One last thing to add...

Certifications don't count for shit. I can get a brand new "expert" certification online today for $50 if I so wanted to... Unfortunately, its just that easy to get them these days.
