    Too Much Oatmeal?

I have been incorporating old fashioned oatmeal into my daily diet because it is a great source of complex carbs and some protein as most of you know. There was a time when I thought that oatmeal may in fact be the perfect food for bulking. Actually, last week I ate 4 servings (1 cup) per day for the entire week along with my other daily meals which really helped me meet my goals for macros.

Now, however, I am realizing that moderation may be required even for something as good as oatmeal. It seems that that the past several mornings I have been limping out of the bathroom like I just got fvcked by a train. I may have crossed the line with the amount of insoluble fiber I ingested because my anus was not designed to pass something of those dimensions.

Has anyone else ever had this experience before? I know that I am a few years away from 50 years old, so the dreaded colonoscopy is looming on my horizon. But to me it doesn't seem like this would be a colon problem since there miraculously hasn't been any bleeding, yet.

lmao. Thanks for the graphic details. I eat 1-2 cups of oatmeal a day and don't have this problem. I do remember about 7 yrs ago I had a huge problem with this. I literally would hold on to railing as I pooped with all my might to make something come out. This lasted for several months and was very painful. Always blood too as it seemed the poo wanted to come out sideways vs. the standard vertical log.

Anyway I know what your going through. Only suggestion I would have is eat more fiber and fruit. If the problem persist see a doctor.

You are saying eat more fiber? I don't know how much more pain I can endure if these things get any bigger.

Yeah, there is such a thing as too much fiber, because it can reduce intestinal absorption of macros and certain nutrients, and an increase in stool (particularly troublesome if you have a colon condition like diverticulitis).
Look to other sources for carbs.

I don't have any history of colon conditions, but there has got to be some practical limit to stool size that can be expelled without surgical intervention.

Anyway, it's good to know that too much fiber can reduce nutrient absorption. I'm doings my best to get all the right macros into my body so I want to make sure they are being converted to energy and muscle. So, it is possible to eat too much oatmeal.

I agree 100% with what Bonaparte said, you for sure can have too much fiber. However 1 cup of oatmeal a day is not a huge amount and although everyone is different is something most could pass without any undue stress on the lower GI system.

As said earlier make sure you are taking in adequate water and as dumb as it sounds make sure you are fully chewing your oatmeal not just swallowing it whole. Also look into making sure your system is breaking down the oatmeal not just giving it a "pass" sometimes you can suffer from problems as simple as low bacterial count particularly after treatment with antibiotics which can often be remidied with the addition of probiotics to restore the intestional flora.

If the problem continues you probably would be well advised to go ahead and bite the bullet and get your lower checkup as many lower intestional and or bowel problems can exist without bleeing from the anus.

I am guilty of swallowing food without completely chewing it. I am especially prone to doing this when in bulking mode because I am trying to eat more food than my appetite supports. Also, it was mentioned before about drinking more water. I know I need to push this as well. At the end of the day though, I think 4 cups of oatmeal/day is too much for my system. I will cut this in half and fill in with other carb sources and see how that works.

I only eat 3/4-1 cup of oats/day. I have no idea what 4 cups would do to my system. Anyway, I have absolutely no idea if this would make a difference, but I put mine in a coffee grinder and throw them in a shake. I think I'd get sick of oatmeal if I ate cooked oatmeal everyday.

Lol...I just bought a coffee grinder yesterday to grind steel cut oats for my whey shakes. Tried it last night and I really liked it. Only problem is I should have shaken mixture between drinks because I ended up with thick slug of oatmeal on bottom after liquid was gone

I just had a endoscopy and colonoscopy last Wednesday actually. You wake up good to go and don't feel a thing, other than some bloating. The prep sucked though. Could live without that. Don't think I'll be drinking gatoraid for a long time....

lol. That is some nasty stuff! I was awake while they did mine and watched it on the monitor. I remember thinking any minute some nasty looking tumor was going to pop up on the screen. It's been five years and is about time to do it again... Oh, joy!

The first time I had one you had to drink a gallon of this horrible tasting stuff. This last time it was 2 6 oz. bottles of some stuff called suprep. I really don't think the second bottle was necessary.

Try to make sure youre not going over ~60g of fiber/day. Also, if you suddenly increase your fiber intake beyond your normal levels it can cause temporary bloating, shits, farting etc for a couple weeks until you get used to it.

Also, I've had a colonoscopy done and Its really not bad at all. Having to drink the gross stuff the day before and shit your brains out was probably the worst part.
