Flushing syringes
Was having a conversation with my buddy and he mentioned he just simply flushed his syringes. I told him he is a fool.
Anyways, he insists there is nothing wrong with it. I however feel that it shouldnt be done, but I couldnt give him any reason on why he shouldnt.
Give me some reasons to pass onto him on why its a bad idea to flush syringes.Last edited by newbrew; 04-04-2005 at 11:36 AM.

He recaps and removes the pin from the syringe, then flushes both. We arent on a septic system so my thoughts are it all ends up at the water treatment plant.
I can't tell him someone is going to get hurt from it, cause well, they wont. But any of you work for the city water dept or anything and can shed some light on what and where this stuff actually goes and what it is effecting?

well, first of all, all that waste goes into treatment. Solid waste is filtered out, and has to be removed by workers. Your buddy is potentially sticking a worker every time he flushes.

A buddy of mine use to work at a power plant. One of the dangers was getting stuck by pin. Just imagine working somewhere and getting stuck because some asshole didn't dispose of his garbage the right way. Now imagine wondering for days if you have been infected with HIV while you wait for the test results.

He must own a plumbing company... or not be the sharpest pencil in the box.

I keep my pins in a puncture proof container...I went tru it the other day and found some of the caps off...
Caps do work their way loose from time to time...so the fact that he caps the pins is irrelevant... somewhere down the line (and most likely by the time the arrive at the treatment plant) the caps'll be off.
Your buddy's inconsiderate

Thanks for the replies. I don't think its really a matter of him being an a$$hole, its just that he is completely ignorant.
Ill pass the info onto him and smack him upside the head if he thinks its still a good idea.

Get a sharps container and bring them to your local hospital/needle exchange for disposal.

you buddy is a douche bag. If he is not responsible enough to dispose in the right way, he is not mature enough to use.

In the least:
Use an old weight gainer or whey container, the BIG one!!!
Dump needles and syringes in it!
When full... Fill with expanding foam
KRAZY glue lid onto container
Toss in trash!
IN THE LEAST!!!

wow hes am idiot. like Blocroc said jsut get and empty protein container and make that your pin disposer and glue the top on and pronto everyone is happy and safe.

Actually, he did mention filling with expandy foam.... you get it in aerosol cans and when it comes out, it immediately expands to fill all cracks and voids, then hardens. This would be a reasonable way of disposal, but better to just get a friggin sharps container. You should not have to pay more than $5 for one online or a bit less from your local medical supply or pharmacy. It's the right thing to do. I don't understand the resistance people have to standard, common, recommended practice regarding disposal of pins. Can everybody give me an "amen", or at least a "duh"?

In my town, and I believe in most cities across Canada, there are needle exchange programs for steroid users and drug addicts. Pins by the box, sharps containers, disposal services, injection and drug use information....all free.
