    Military Press...

    My question is do you go behind your head, or in front of it near the collar bone?

    behind my head hurts my shoulder sometimes, so what's the diff. in you guys' opinions?

    i never go behind my head with movements like that. Always to the front. I was always told when i was younger that that is detrimental to your rotator cuff.....i guess it stuck in me. In terms of the difference muscle wise i would think that to the front is almost solely front delts and that to the rear would incorporate more of the medial and rear heads.

    I do behind the neck. I was tought in high school that infont is a shoulder press and behind the neck was military press. I startend doing them on the smith recently to take away stress on the rotator cuff. I super set them with dumb bell laterals and get a great pump/burn going. More so than clean&press or push presses.

    If it hurts dont do it behind your head...dont worry your not missing out...

    If the problem occurs even when in front you could use the smith...I will be trying that for the first time tomorrow...

    ive been told many times that doing military press behind the neck is bad for your rotator cuffs, so i only do it to the front.

    Yeah i do it in front, and i never thought about the Smith Machine...

    Behind the neck is waiting for disaster, as well as heavy dumbells. Front shoulder presses along with lateral raises and rear delt extensions are plenty for the shoulder IMO. I'll never do anything other than front shoulder presses with a straight bar.

    Always in front, I don't do it behind the neck because it hurts my rotator cuff. It's dangerous anyways. If you do it, do it with caution. But I recommend front presses.

    you don't do DB shoulder presses?! I can't fathom not doing them, they're my favorite shoulder exercise.

    Nova, I don't do anything behind the neck (including btn pulldowns). I was pressing 275 on btn press, and was always in great shoulder pain. Additionally, Someone wiser than myself recommended that I remove all btn exercises, and I did.

    Once i moved up to 80+ dubells for military presses, both my shoulders gave out and now i am injured. Like i said before, i will never do heavy dumbells again for shoulder press, and i will never suggest to anyone that they do them.

    ill chime in here since boulders are my faves.. in hs when learing some of the ropes i would do btn military presses, touch the neck and back up. well, to make a long story short. in college while playin ball i ended up tearing thehell outa my shoulder and rc. trainers said it was prolly from all the btn presses i usta do.. since then its db presses and arnolds always heavy.
