THYROID FUNCTION TESTS - Is this right?

    Hi guys,

Confused about these results. Since 2-weeks back I have been taking T3 at 100mcg/day and T4 at 200mcg/day at 10 pm. This blood test was performed at 9 am so almost 11h after the medication was taken. Should my values not be severely elevated?

    THYROID FUNCTION TESTS (Chemiluminescence)

    TRI IODOTHYRONINE (T3)
    My Value: 1.94 ng/ml
    Ref: 0.7 - 2.0 ng/ml

    THYROXINE (T4)
    My Value: 6.20 mcg/dl
    Ref: 4.5 - 10.9

    THYROID STIMULATING HORMONE
    My Value: 0.01 mcIU/ml
    Ref: 0.55 - 4.78 mcIU/ml

The issue is you tested for Total T3 and T4. That's bound up (inactive) hormones. What's available to tissue is the unbound quota and that's why the only proper hormone panel would comprise Free T3/T4 and not total.

Beside, the total T3 is borderline high already, and that's suggestive of overdose. T3 have a rather short t/2 so that value might tend to be higher after administration, yet the suppressive effect on TSH will last much longer...

Thank you. What would be the correct test to ask for to see effects of t3 and t4?

There aren't much clues you can get from bloodwork about thyroid status other than specific tests. TSH is considered the main indicator.
