There is no early warning system in those countries due to their poverty there. They rely completely upon foreginers for their sustinence. They would still be hunting and gathering if they didnt live in such beautiful surroundings and have tourism for revenue. Imagine living on an Island in the middle of the ocean hundreds and thousands of miles from land. They really have no resources to grow wealth. Sri Lank one of the hardest hit has been under years of civil war. Scientists also said that even with an early warning system the casualties could not have been much lower due to the force and quickness of the destruction. So saying these guys sat on the beach drinking margaritas is not just insensitive but asanine as well and completely ridiculous assumption. From watching videos on TV you can see that these poor people were obviously running for their lives.

You remind me alot of myself when i was younger. I too had the same mentality. But i came to realise that i had been living enclosed and apart from the rest of the world and once i got to meet alot of people from all over the globe and i realised how small the world really is and i grew up. I understand what youre getting at and I have said far worse. Yeah it probably wont impact you life too much. Tv timetables may be messed up a bit, you dont know any of the individuals there, why try and get depressed when its not going to make a difference. Thing is these people do matter. You dont have to know their names, they still count. Switch places, imagine the disaster is happening to you. Do you matter? should people care about you? (if i was asked that question a few years back i would have said i was expendable, same as everyone else). You may not feel anything and thats up to you. But i expect one day you will.
