Pass This on to Any Women You Know & Care About
Pass This on to Any Women You Know & Care About
I knew about the red light on cars, but not the *677. It was about 1 PM in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend. An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on. Lauren's parents have 4
children (high school and college age) and have always told them never
to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather wait until they get a gas station, etc.
Lauren had actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called *677
on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her.The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she was and there weren't, and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way.
Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground. The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes.
I never knew about the *677 Cell Phone Feature, but especially for a woman
alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car.
Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a "safe" place. You obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them (i.e. put on your hazard lights) or call *677 like Lauren did.
Too bad the cell phone companies don't generally give you this little bit
of wonderful information.
---Speaking to a service representative at **Bell** Mobility confirmed that
*677 was a direct link to OPP Dispatch. So, now it's your turn to let your friends know about *677.---
Send this to every woman you know, it may save a life.

WOW, good post. I know a couple years ago I heard about a couple guys that got pulled over by a criminal that way coming home from the casino. He ended up killing both of the men and robbing them on the freeway. Its a sick world man...
Good post though, I appreciate it.

good thread, but the *677 does not work in every state.
http://www.snopes.com/horrors/mayhem/fakecop.asp
(Although in some U.S. states, #77 on a cell phone will immediately connect you to that state's highway patrol, that code is not universal. Some states use #77, but others use *55, *47, or *HP, and some don't have any special code at all. Rather than frantically try to figure out which one will work in the area you're in, get around the problem by going straight to 911.)

In the province of Quebec the number is *4141 on any cellphone... that'll get you the Provincial Police dispatch.
In this province be aware that the provincial police doesn't normally use unmarked cars for traffic stops and if it happens an unmarked car will be a standard "cop car" (caprice, impala, crown vic), with a full Xmas tree of strobes and flashers mounted permanently in the windshield, headlights, grill and a siren.... they NEVER just have a little kojak light stuck to the roof. The cop will always be in uniform.
If you're in Montreal (largest town in the province), then don't ever worry about unmarked cars... they don't have flashers or sirens and are not allowed to do traffic stops. They can also be anything from a sheetbox honda to a lincoln continental. If a montreal cop in an unmarked car wants you pulled over he'll radio for a marked car or simply send you a ticket in the mail.
Just FYI
