South Florida Gym recommendations
Hi guys and gals,
I will be re-relocating (I was overseas for a number of years and am moving back "home" in two weeks) to Coral Springs, FL. I am getting back into the iron game after a 10 year hiatus, and am looking for a gym in the area.
I need the following:
-Free weights with an area that has a nice "powerlifting /oly lifting area"
-$50 or less a month
I like the following:
-Use of chalk
-Sauna
-monthly lockers / "clean enough shower"
-friendly staff that are not just sales/PT, but actual people who like their jobs, etc.
-patrons willing to spot, work in, etc.
I dislike:
-Pick up joints that look like gyms, lots of talking and sitting on benches
-Concurrent yoga classes/spinning classes/ full court basketball, etc (nothing wrong with all of that, I just prefer my $ goes into the stuff that I prioritize when going to the gym)
By now, you can probably figure what kind of place I would like. Do you go to one of those places around the West Ft. Lauderdale area? Would you recommend it?
Thanks!

I live in Coral Springs
your options are:
-24 hour fitness (small, but ok)
-Bally's (which I've heard is dirty)
-Gold's (Pine Island, south of Southgate)
-LA Fitness (University, west of Royal Palm.....a bit of a meet market)
-lots of private trainers on Sample Road if that's what you're looking for

Yeah, that's sorta my problem. I am looking for a place that is not really a big box chain. I have actually trained at all of those places except for Bally's at some point in my youth. Gold's was the best of the lot, but as I recall, they vary drastically from place to place. The one I did train at was OK, but no chalk, and as I recall, lacking in bumper plates, etc. 24 Hr was the worst. Cardio equipment was 75% of the gym, with 20% machines, and 5% freeweights, a couple of dumbells. (It was also the only game in town where I lived, then.)
The search continues. I will lurk over at the powerlifting section here and see what I can rustle up.

well i dont know if you travel down into the Miami are but if so you can look up Porky's, Miami Airport Gym and the Gold on NW 57th ave are a few that you can check out in the Miami area.
Up in Coral Spring, Hollywood, Pembroke Pines are its going to be tough. There was a great one years ago on west Sterling but has since closed - so, thats not gonna help ya.
Ill ask around, if I hear of something in that area, Ill post it

In that city,or any near city there are no gyms that come close to fitting that mold.
the town sucks, years ago there was ronnis gym on wiles rd, that was the shit...
now its just all bubble gum gyms...
best bet, set up ur own gym in ur garage....

I used to live in Coral Springs, now I'm in Coconut Creek. The LA Fitness in Springs is a POS. However, the LA Fitness in Coconut Creek (Lyons Rd and Sawgrass) is a great gym. 50% of the gym is weights, free weights and machines. I find it only crowded between 6-7pm and its hit or miss. But if you workout in the morning or lunch its empty or after 8-9pm its pretty empty too.
But the place is filled to the brim with so much hot brazillian ass its insane, I get to pump iron with great quality equipment it what feels like a strip club

Haha... Well, my brother goes to LA fatness, so I guess it might be a lock. He lives in Deer field, and I will be living in Coral Springs. Wonder how I can convince the little lady as to why I am trucking out to Coconut Creek? I saw a decent looking place in Margate, "Just Lift Fitness center".. Looked real small, but pretty good. Anyone have any experience there?

Porky's is only $170/year, no contract. I wish they were up north a bit.
