LOLOLOL true..... a powerlifter COULD diet down..... I just don't want to push those kinds of weight. I'd hate to tear a pec or something..... I'd rather keep it light (by powerlifting standards) and still look great. Not really into benching 500+ pounds.....

there really is no debate to be had here... each does their own thing to the best of their abilities to reach a level. This fight goes back and forth with no one ever making a really good statement cause each side has good points as well as those idiots who participate in each which makes the sport look rediculous. Lots of "bodybuilders" look like pretty boys and cant even do a chin up, then you have those guys who are too lazy to actually get into shape, just try to lift heavy and make the excuse "Im a powerlifter, not a pretty boY" which is clearly their excuse for not putting down the cheetos

I think jay cutler said it best "It's not about what you lift its about what you look like you can lift."

I have alot of respect for powerlifters but ruining my body is not what I got into this for...All my powerlifting budies are falling apart and any time I have an injury it comes from lifting in the 1-5 rep range even with proper form.
Power lifting is hard work! Its not for the faint of heart. I might be "weak" for a power lifter but for the every day gym rat Im strong as hell! there arnt many guys at my gym who can throw up 275lb for 8 on bench or 405 for 10 deadlifts.
I ****ed up my knee by powerlifting so now I stick to light weight and tempo when I do squats.

Yeah, that's a total bullshit statement! Anyway, this is always a pointless debate. Although being a bodybuilder to me is like driving a camaro or a mustang with a V-6. You look strong and powerful but in reality...not so much, but still a nice car, regardless, LOL!! Being a strongman/powerlifter is being a dually, you can only dress it up so much! LOL!!!
Seriously though, both, at a high level, require some serious dedication. The popular misconception is that powerlifters eat whatever they want, that isn't true. Just like the popular misconception that bodybuilders all run consistently very strict diets. I've seen bodybuilders who eat like shit and I've seen powerlifters who eat more strict than any bodybuilder.
I think its all about focus and goals. Bodybuilders need a certain body type to be successful. Let's face there hasn't been very many (if any), extremely successful bodybuilders over 6'4 (Lou is the gold standard but still being the greatest escaped him). I like being stronger than most, and I could care less about "looking good". When a bunch of bodybuilding MEN call me fat, it doesn't bother when women love how I look.

Hate to break it you, those are crappy numbers, I know high school athletes with those numbers.
I digress, those aren't crappy numbers. But rather good numbers for guys who compete in the 185's, 198's, 220lbs categories. Not for these 260-300lb bodybuilders who slabs of muscle.Last edited by BgMc31; 03-17-2011 at 04:36 PM.

I have a ton of respect for powerlifters but you know what side of the argument I am gonna fall on. Bodybuilding is the harder sport in my opinion. We train as hard or harder in the gym, (albeit a different style) and have the whole dieting aspect to it as well. I have squatted 500lbs for 3 reps and I have squatted 315 for 25 reps, I know for me the latter of those two was way more intense and much tougher to do.
As a bodybuilder I am still stronger and can lift more weight than 90% of everyone I know and still get to walk around with a six pack of abs at well over 200lbs. Just my preference, to each his own. Anyone who pursues either sport to a level where they are competing has my respect.

I would take less strength and this look any day of the week
That being said, i still highly respect powerlifters.Last edited by DSM4Life; 03-17-2011 at 05:24 PM.

You all keep pointing out the stereotypical look of powerlifters. Its like assuming all bodybuilders look the same on stage as they do off stage.
All above are powerlifters/strongmen. Now I'm sure people can bring up fat looking bodybuilders in the off-season as well right? Lee Priest anyone?
Fireguy, I get what you are saying, but working out harder is relative. Powerlifters do 20 rep squats all the time with much more than 315 on a regular basis. I didn't know there was so much ignorance in regards to powerlifting. The 1-5 rep scheme isn't done all the time for powerlifters, we do high rep movements as well, we do isolation exercises, too. It depends on the time of year and how close to contests that determines our workout schemes. You can't lump all powerlifters into the fat guy category. Those are mostly super heavyweight guys. There are many many weight classes in powerlifting. Look at the bodies of some of the guys who lift in the 280lb class and below.

No doubt the lifts some human beings are capable of are simply astounding.
But I read through a complete thread in the power lifting forum the other day about bench max and other sort. The common theme by the end ( of the guys who have truly lifted some poundage's) was torn rotators and knee surgeries.
I'll stick to three plates for reps and let the big boys do the big thangs.
Good Luck To Both

I hate both, how's that for a stance??!!
That's because I don't fall under either category. I'm just a gimp trying to build an aesthetically pleasing, strong and healthy body.

I find most "power lifters" in my gym are massive D-bags! they like to think they know it all and they seem to like to tell other how to lift. Thats not all of them of course but many put them selfs on a pedestal!
As an example : I gave a kid a diet to gains weight because he asked me (which included 5000cals very clean!) and this d-bag "power lifter" at my gym told him in front of me not to listen to me but to eat a bag of gummy bears and a couple cokes post workout and to just drink lots of milk and eat Mcdonalds for lunch....I told the kid yeah that works if you want to look like him lol he asked for my advice for a reason.
Im sure this will make alot of powerlifters very mad haha

...and there are no bodybuilders that are douchebags? Lou Ferrigno....
WTF does this have to with this discussion?
What I'm trying to figure out is the guys who are bashing powerlifters and describing powerlifters, what are your experiences with powerlifting/powerlifters besides what you see online? The one's you know are they really powerlifters or just guys who claim to be.
I have mad respect for bodybuilders as you'll never see me debate what is better with a guy like Fireguy, because like me, he's accomplished in his sport. Seems to be the guys bashing powerlifting haven't done anything in bodybuilding either. Of all the bodybuilders I know (and I know plenty, including 3 Mr. O's) all have mad respect for powerlifters. And the high level powerlifters and strongmen I know (and being one, I know even more), all give mad respect to bodybuilders.Last edited by BgMc31; 03-17-2011 at 07:12 PM.
