I go to golds most the time, then a private powerlifting/strongman gym every Saturday. I am the opposite of most people because the gym is my social life also so i love when its crowded.

^^^ Don't be intimidated. Get in there and workout and learn. No one starts out looking like Dorian Yates and those guys in there working out had to start somewhere too. And they won't say a word to you. If anything, they'll appreciate the fact that you are in there working out.

goodlife fitness which does the trick and im friends with alot of the big guys who workout there so I like it....although somtimes I think in the long run it would be cheaper to buy a bunch stuff at home. I bet for a couple grand I could get some really good used equipment from old gyms.
Bench press
squat rack
pull up bars
cables
weight set
chains and bands
I prob pay about $700 a year plus my gf who I live with so that $1400 a year...I could have a better gym at home for 2-3 grand.

don't really like the gym environment... too many posers, and then I HATE it when I'm being watched.... screws with my concentration. So I just invest in my own equipment and workout out at home.... when I'm home that is....

The best gym I ever trained at was one in S Atlanta called "Muscle World" back in the 90s. Small hole in the wall with nothing but bodybuilders. Also one of the greatest bunch of people I ever hung around. Alas I moved and life took over and since then it's been tricky at best.
Golds I suppose was the best commercial gym, but still too many dweebs in the way. By that I mean punks who strut thier bird cage chests, pencil legs and 13" arms like they are the next coming of Arnold. screaming during reps, yelling, dropping the bar from 5 feet high and high fiving thier brahs...And there always seems to be a group of them invading the bench press area 24/7. And the fru fru chicks that sit on a machine yapping to some random guy for 30 minutes doing a light set every 10 mins or so.
So, the "best" gym nowadays? The one at my house. It might have cost a few thousand, but it's pretty complete. power racks, assorted benches, dumbells, cables and a couple of specific things for legs and back. The beauty is, there's never any douche in the way and I can play music as loud as I want. I'm in my 40s now so the social aspect of it all is irrelavent. I can focus on the work, not the environment.
Best bet is to shop around for a commercial gym if you don't have the space or $$ for a complete home set up. I mean 90% free weights, not some multi station thing. If you don't feel comfortable in a gym, do NOT spend your hard earned money there. Let the "aesthetics" crowd have it. That's thier scene anyway. The west coast dungeons of the 60s and 70s are pretty much gone. But if you're lucky enough to find a hole in the wall with like minded people, DO IT. It could be the best $$ you ever spent. But, good luck finding one nowadays.

i wish i could afford a home gym, but i mean i dont really mind going to the one i go to, all my friends go there so its kinda like a social area but i dont normally bullshit i work out but you know ill say hi and on my way out make plans for later on, only bad thing is of course 20 bucks a month and the gas to get there, but i dont really mind, its more motivating to me to go out and work out, and another thing, all my old highschool girl friends go so thats always fun too hahah elipticals at their finest i guess hahah
